On November 5, information on how to become a flight attendant was offered at Dahyang Kwan in Dongguk University (DU). Most girls dreamed of being a flight attendant in their childhood. She also dreamed of the blue sky. Her name is Ham Myeong-nyeo. The following are the words of her, a 2007 graduate of DU and a flight attendant of Asiana Airlines. Ms. Ham studied Public Administration, which is not directly related to her current job. Still, she achieved her dream.
"When I was a senior, I was preparing for civil service examination, which is related to my major. One day, my mother proposed that I be a flight attendant, because my older cousin was planning to be one. At that moment, I decide to be a flight attendant, which I had once dreamt of. I thought that civil service is a service job like a flight attendant. So I felt I prepared for both careers," said ms. Ham
- Exam Process
"There are four steps to prepare for the flight attendant examination. The first step is to write about why you want to become a flight attendant. The next step is an interview about practical business related to the Asiana Airlines. The third step is a health check-up, that tests the strength of the abdomen and arms. There is a swimming test, too. In her case she practiced sit-ups and swimming everyday. The last step is an oral English test. To prepare for the oral test you can enroll in a short course at an academy, but I joined an internet club instead. All of the club members dreamt of being a flight attendant; so we formed a study group to prepare for the oral test. "I also read a book on the airline business. These preparations helped me to become a flight attendant," said miss Ham.
-Requirements for becoming a flight attendant
1. You should keep your body strong and healthy.
Your height must be at least 162cm. Your corrected eyesight should be better than 1.0. Being either too thin or too fat is not good. It is very important that you should keep your body healthy and strong because a flight attendant often lifts heavy things and flying for a long time requires stamina. And there are frequent muscular-strength tests after you become a flight attendant.
2. You need good English skill.
Actually, English is very critical for a job hunter in these days. A flight attendant is no exception. You must score at least 620 on the TOEIC test and be skilled at speaking English to be a flight attendant. “When I was a senior, I had already scored more than 620 on the TOEIC test before preparing for the civil service examination. I also studied English conversation. To be a flight attendant you have to be proficient in speaking an airline English. In my case, because I studied in Public Administration for the last four years, an airline English is a new area for me, too. I worried about it, so I joined a studying group and we practiced interviewing each other," said Miss Ham.
3. Don't forget to keep a bright smile on your face.
Even if a flight attendant is beautiful, she must smile from the bottom of her heart. A flight attendant must serve a customer, and the service should be sincere. It is difficult that you always maintain your smile for a long time. "In my case, I smile at myself in a mirror everyday. Moreover, I am positive about everything and take a cheerful view of my life. This is why I smile in a very natural way," said Miss Ham.
-Advice for job-hunter
"Most students focus on TOEIC or TOEFL in their senior year to fit into most companies' basic requirement. So did I. However, you need to experience many activities while in school. Various activities, career-related tasks like internship, help you to live in the community. By meeting new people, you can develop sociability."
Miss Ham said, "Don't worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss by not even trying."
