Seobongsa Temple awarded scholarships for 10 Dongguk University students for fostering local future Buddhists. /Photography by Hwang Chae-yeon |
Seobongsa Temple scholarship certificate award ceremony was held in the meeting room of the school founding committee which is on the fifth floor of Dongguk University Main Hall on March 29th. It was the first scholarship award at Seobongsa Temple, and the ninth regional future Buddhist promotion scholarship ceremony at Dongguk University. There attended Ven. Don Kwan Sunim, the chairman of the School Founding Committee, Yoon Sung-yee, the president of Dongguk University, Park Gi-ryeon, the Secretary-General of the School Founding Committee, Ji Jeong-hak, the head of the Corporate Affairs Department, Kim Ae-ju, the director of Foreign Cooperation and Park Gwang-hyeon, the head of the Faculty and Student Affairs Department. Four scholarship donors, Ven. Hyujeong Sunim, the chief Buddhist monk of Seobongsa Temple, Ven. Heoun Sunim, the chief Buddhist monk of Gwaneumsa Temple, Ven. Hyegeo and the leader of the congregation from Seobongsa Temple also attended. There were 10 senior Dongguk University students from Yongin-si, selected out of 213 students who were awarded the scholarship.
In this ceremony, Seobongsa Temple rewarded a total of 10,000,000 won for Dongguk University students. Ven. Don Kwan Sunim congratulated the 10 scholarship students and said, “The sincere letters of thanks written by students are always touching. I am happy to award scholarships to students who have continued part-time jobs for four years. I hope all students will be proud to be a Dongguk University student. In particular, as seniors gathered, I hope that the planned Job Fair on September 1st will be successfully held so that seniors can get a job in the companies they want.” Yoon Sung-yee said, “Dongguk University aims to become one of the top five universities in Korea and one of the world's top 100. The School Founding Committee is planning a prestigious university that will grant full scholarships to all Dongguk University students within 2035 to help them design the future without worrying about tuition fees. Students who received scholarships today should also try to look back and help their school and juniors when they enter society after graduation.” Moreover, Ven. Hyujeong Sunim said, “If we have more chances in the future, Seobongsa Temple will continue to donate scholarships for future Buddhists.”
Lee Hae-chan, a senior in the Department of Energy and Materials Engineering, said, “Thank you for giving me a scholarship and giving me the opportunity to say thank you. Last year, I had financial difficulties while serving as the chairman of the department’s student council and studying at the same time with a part-time job. Whenever that happened, I always received help from Dongguk University through a scholarship. I believe I can achieve my dream thanks to those who help me. As the first student of Seobongsa Scholarship, I will become a senior who is a model for the juniors.” Kim Da-som, a senior in the Department of History Education, said, “The scholarship I received today will be used for the educational expenses to fulfill my dream. I will grow into a good person and become a helpful person for Dongguk University and Seobongsa Temple.” Kim Su-jeong, a senior in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, said, “I will donate for the restoration of recent forest fire damage. I was sad only with my heart, but thank you for letting me practice donation. I will remember what I felt today and become a person who practices sharing.”
