During the 2018 Student Council Election period, it is not too much to say that the abolishment of the General Coed Student Council (GCSC) was the main issue. Although there were several controversies about early voting and candidates of the General Student Council (GSC), few Donggukians noticed about those. From November 19th to 21st, Student Council Election of the GSC, each college and major, and the Preparing Committee for Graduation (PCG). Also, the referendum of the GCSC’s abolishment were conducted. Compared with the 2017 election, the polling date was not extended as the vote rate was over 50 percent on the last day of the voting period. The ballot count started at 8:30 P.M. and took about eight hours. The candidate of the GSC, “One Step,” and the candidate of the PCG, “Bisang,” were elected with 78.8 percent and 86.5 percent of favorable votes respectively.
Unfortunately, not everything went smoothly. The early voting of international students, which was implemented for the first time, was proceeded from November 15th to 16th for two days. The problem arose as the Chinese Student Council distributed the album of NCT127 to international students to encourage voting. Even though motivating students to vote should have been discussed with the General Representative Council (GRC), it was not. Therefore, the GRC uploaded an article on the Facebook that writes “We now recognized the problem with this incident. However, the Chinese Student Council is not included in the independent student organizations, so it was not breaking the law. We will try harder to make impartial election.”
There was a small issue around the candidate of the GSC, Yeo Dae-hee, too. According to the "Apdamhwa," which is the student autonomy press in Dongguk University, they have received an anonymous report including the picture that he moved a ballot box during the election period. Since the candidate getting involved in the ballot counting is unacceptable, some students criticized him. However, without any official position, this affair was forgotten due to the explosive interest in the abolishment of the GCSC. More information of the GCSC is on the Cover Story.
