Debut Essay from 47th Post Reporter

The second semester of my university life can be explained by newspapers that I work for and six people that I newly met. I can remember every moment that I spent with The Dongguk Post since I was accepted as one of their reporters. I usually think too much before beginning something. It also took me a very long time to decide whether to apply for the Post or not. The decisive moment to apply for the Post was my mother’s advice. My mother always says “The beginning is half of the whole. You never know before you start.” Luckily, I finally was accepted as a cub reporter for The Dongguk Post.

Life as a cub reporter was a series of difficulties. I had to go to school by 8 A.M. for a week, where I learned many things such as writing articles and using a camera in a very short time. Even though there were hard tasks like interviewing and meeting, it was a new and interesting experience for me.
The most important thing that I realized is that reporters should have confidence in themselves. Working as
a cub reporter, I had many interviews with various people around campus. At first, it was awkward for me to talk with people that I had never met before. Sometimes my voice was trembling like a sheep in front of interviewees. Now I have become more accustomed to meeting new people than before, but I think I still have a lot to learn about how to interact with people.

At the item meetings, it was shocking to see all reporters debating on discussion papers. Sometimes the debate was so intense that some reporters were offended, but now I know that this process is all for making a better newspaper. After a long procedure of writing an article, editing, and typesetting, a newspaper is published. The happiness of reading my articles in a newspaper makes me forget all the hard procedures. Every time a newspaper is published, I show it to my family and friends and tell them about the articles that I wrote.

When I think back of my time as a cub reporter, all my stupid and clumsy behaviors pass through my head. Six months have passed since I first entered past the door of The Dongguk Post and I will be a regular reporter from this semester. Now I am standing at a new starting line, ready to move forward. As my title changes, my role and responsibility in The Dongguk Post will be bigger. Sometimes it will be burdensome, but I am sure that I can overcome it well.
