Cham Saram Service’s in Kazakhstan

Students from the campus organization Dongguk Cham Saram Service (CSS) visited Kazakhstan to do volunteer work from July 20th to August 4th. In total, 29 students went there, together with some university administrators. Originally, 30 students were supposed to participate. However, because one student was very sick, the final number was 29 students. Volunteers went to Almaty Sanatorium for Senior Citizen with Mental Disorders, and they built an outdoor gazebo called the “Shelter of friendship”. (A gazebo is a pavilion structure, sometimes octagonal, that may be built, in parks, gardens, and spacious public areas).

Actually, Kazakhstan was not among the countries selected for support through volunteer work. However, because Dongguk is actively engaging in an exchange program with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Kazakhstan to develop an exchange program, CSS decided to set up a volunteer program. Volunteers built the gazebo from the mornings to afternoons, and they became mentors for students majoring in Korean Language at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in the evening. Volunteers demonstrated Korean traditional games, clothes (hanbok), and other parts of Korean culture. The students studying Korean also showed their traditional culture. Moreover, in addition to their volunteer work, the Dongguk volunteers also became students in Kazakhstan. The students had time to do a summer program in the University, taking a course in Regional Studies. In addition, 10 of the 29 volunteers stayed one more week and did short internships at Woolim Construction Company and Shinhan Bank.

Jeong Seok-chan, who was the team leader of the 29 volunteers, said that because it was first time he was an overseas volunteer, he had to study a lot and dealt with a lot of stress as a leader. Thankfully, the members' synergy and passion were so great that they accomplished all their goals for this program. In addition, he wanted to send his appreciation to CSS and his parents for giving him this great opportunity.
