On April 26th, 2010, one mother’s life hung in the balance due to severe bleeding upon the delivery of her child. The mother, in critical condition, had to be given a blood transfusion. Complicating matters were the mother’s blood was a rare type; RH negative B. During this emergency, her brother left a message on his twitter asking people for help. His message was spread widely and instantly among twitter users and was met with encouragement. More than forty people whose blood type was RH negative B came to the hospital and gave blood donations. Thanks to all of them, the mother and her new baby are now living healthy. Situations like this show just how effective twitter can be. But what is twitter? Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
The definition of twitter is a free social networking system which has a micro-blog service system. You can leave the message by using only 140 words in your twitter. Leaving the message in your twitter is called a ‘tweet’ which means a short, high-pitched sound made by a small bird.
The multilingual services including English are supported and users in the world can have brief conversations and communicate with friends without restrictions. This trait is called a one-way personal connection. This feature is dissimilar to established blog systems. Also twitter has many useful functions. Let’s look at two.
First the twitter has succeeded because of this function. This function is ‘following and follower’. Using the function, you can follow who you want to. This function is different from the existing blog system. In the blog system, if you want to make a relationship with bloggers, you need to be allowed by bloggers, but in the following function you can connect with each other without the host’s allowing. This means you can follow the host. This allows twitter users to communicate with celebrities. Second, the twitter has a messenger function. This similarly exists in the blog system but this function is a little different from the ordinary function. The existing function is that users need to send the message in person. But in twitter, users do not need to send the messages. Just by writing on his or her twitter, it can spread out to their followers. Go Jae-yul, a reporter in SISA IN magazine, said “there are a lot of people in the world and I cannot meet everyone. But in twitter I can contact a lot of people and know people’s opinion without limits. Above all, real time is the best trait.”
Twitter can also be interlocked with smart phones. This interlock has helped twitter to become more popular. By using smart phones, twitter users can leave messages at anytime, and anywhere. Followers can also respond to these messages immediately. Eighty-two percent of workers using smart phones have twitters, JOB KOREA’s survey points out.
Twitter is now taking the front seat in social media. Above all its openness and real time capacity has helped twitter evolve as the enterprise’s top brand communication tool. Twitter truly became the talk of the town when it imparted information faster than CNN. America's first black president, Barack Obama also used twitter in his political activities in the last presidential election. Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Demi Fog have caused a great sensation by attempting unique twitter communication.
Speedy expansion is also playing an important role in twitter’s popularization. This is done with the follower function. For example, if I twit a message, people who follow me can see my message. And people who follow me re-tweet (is called RT) the message. Then the message can be seen by their followers as well. By this way, messages can be spread to a huge number of people in a very short time.
There are lots of merits for using twitter. Recently corporations are adapting their marketing strategy by using twitter. For example, in the town house hotel customers can order their breakfast and lunch by using their twitter. PHILIPS has also opened a twitter account and has attracted voluntary participation from customers. The customers who test PHILIPS products are selected and rewarded with movie tickets. Comcast, the number one cable TV in America, takes advantage of twitter. Comcast opened a customer helpline twitter. Before opening this helpline twitter, the Comcast’s customer satisfaction was the lowest in this area. But running this helpline twitter, the Comcast’s customer satisfaction is now at the top.
But twitter has also demerits. While twitter can express one’s opinion and mind freely and quickly, these expressions may not be refined and treated for their content matter. This can cause twitter to be polluted. Unrefined messages are very similar to junk mail.
Twitter is not good at security. Enterprises and businesses have security systems but a common person’s twitter does not have such security systems. In twitter, personal information and privacy details can be revealed easily. Twitter has now improved the security strength by using the I-pin system. When you want to join a website, you need to register a resident registration number from now on. Also with the I-pin system, you don’t have to use the resident registration number to be identified as yourself. You can only be identified as yourself by using I-pin ID and Password. This system has prevented the leaking of private information.
To summarize, social networking media have been popular for a long time. At the top is Facebook. In Korea, however, personal media like blogs, twitter and Miny-Hompys are still popular. With the release of the I-Phone, the number of twitter users is growing. Above all, Koreans are sensitive about trends. Big brands and their products are popular in Korea. Now twitter wields a very strong influence over the Internet compared to the half a million users of blogs. OikoLab research \shows that the number of twitter users may break through the one million barriers.
Twitter has started a revolution. Shortly, social network media will not be referred to without using the word twitter.
