Dongguk University held a “Jeju Gwaneumsa temple Scholarship Ceremony” at 11 A.M. on Thursday, December 23rd in the conference room of the Construction Committee on the 5th floor of the main building. The meeting was attended by Dongguk University officials, including Buddhist monk Heo Woon, believer president Kim Moon-ja, chairman of Gwaneumsa Temple, Buddhist monk Don Kwan, the school president Yoon Sung-yee, and extra officials with 10 scholarship students from Jeju who were received 10 million won scholarship funds.
Buddhist monk Don Kwan, chairman of Dongguk University’s founding committee, said, “University is an educational institution that fosters talent with the spirit of Buddhism, wisdom, and mercy. I would like to express my gratitude to the monks of Gwaneumsa Temple in Jeju Island, the believer chairman, and the team leader who came a long way, and many people including President Yoon Sung-yee, and the deputy director of school affairs. At first, it was very surprising that 102 students enrolled in Dongguk University in Jeju Island. Now, I am happy to deliver scholarships to 10 students first in Jeju Island.” President Yoon Sung-yee, said “I sincerely ask everyone in here to help students from Jeju to study comfrotably without part-time jobs or other things so that they do not have any difficulties in studying, as I have various scholarships in mind. I once again ask the students to continue to study hard to develop on behalf of the Jeju region and raise their status in the world, and I hope there will be great results in the future.”
Jeju Gwaneumsa temple Buddhist monk Heo Woon, said “I attended Dongguk University in 1988, but now, I give scholarships to students, which is so meaningful.” Believer chairman Kim Moon-ja said, “I hope this meaningful scholarship can help students study."
Yang Bu-hyun (Buddhist Studies Department), a student who received a scholarship on this day, said, “When I was attending Samsung Girls’ High School in Seogwipo, I had an experience participating in the temple stay at Gwaneumsa Temple. That is why, a valuable relationship seems to exist between me and Buddhist since I came to the Buddhist department and awarded the Gwaneumsa Temple scholarship. Gwaneumsa Temple is a historic temple as it has a long history, and monk Heo Woon practices to show various sharing and virtue spirit at its center. I will accept this spirit and become a person who can devote myself to study and practice and return to society."
