Jung Hye-in

Freshman

Department of Theatre

Dongguk University

Hello, I am Jeong Hye-in, a freshman at Dongguk University, majoring in Directing in the Department of Theatre. The period of my high school years, long for some and short for others, was a time during which I earnestly wished for admission to Dongguk University. As I am writing this article, with the entrance ceremony just around the corner, this moment unbelievably joyous.

After being accepted to Dongguk University, I initially felt as though I was on cloud nine, thrilled and excited, but simultaneously, felt anxious. Up until now, my studies were somewhat structured, with friends by my side and support from the adults around me. As I move forward, I need to become independent, design my future, and take my first steps into society. However, now I realize that the anxiety stemmed from my anticipation of a bright future. The fact that nothing is fixed is appealing to me because it means I can create everything from scratch. Thus, I am preparing for a new leap at Dongguk University, writing down my bucket list one by one.

Before entering Dongguk University, what excites me the most are the courses I will take. I have been interested in theater for a long time and have hoped to pursue theater directing as a career path. Before my admission, I watched student performances at the university and dreamed of practicing at the Lee Hae-rang Theater. I am anticipated to take in-depth theater courses through my undergraduate studies. Besides major courses, I also want to actively participate in and achieve good grades in group projects, which are considered the essence of university life, through minor courses, ― I particularly enjoy reading and discussing activities, so I am looking forward to seminar classes among the common liberal art courses.

If asked to name the most interesting activity one can experience in university, I would say studying abroad. I enjoy meeting new people, traveling to various places, gaining experiences, and embracing challenges. I would like to improve my English and Spanish skills during the semester to study abroad as an exchange student, immerse myself in foreign cultures, and broaden my worldview. Not only do I want to study abroad, but also experience the DUBUD program.

Through Dongguk University’s Instagram account, I learned that there are various school clubs allowing for a wide range of activities beyond academics. I have always wanted to engage in activities that allow for the exchange of warm hearts, as I had received much help from others. I want to join a volunteer club to help others, which I believe will help me mature internally.

During the exhausting period of preparing for university admission, thinking about what I wanted to do in university helped me to heal my spirit. Becoming a part of Dongguk University as an “Ako,” makes me incredibly proud and happy. Moving forward, I want to study hard and excel to become a talent that shines at Dongguk University. I hope not only for myself but for all freshmen entering in the 2024 academic year and current students to have a happy year. I am looking forward to enjoying my youth on campus, wearing Dongguk University’s Gwajam!
