Do You Want to Hear an Interesting Story About Chungmuro?

   “What station is Dongguk University located at? Where do you want to eat and play after class today?” All of the same donggukians will answer the previous questions. That is, “Chungmuro.” In particular, Chungmuro is a very friendly and close subway station for the Donggukians. If you are attending Dongguk University like this, you must have heard a lot about the name Chungmuro. However, have you ever thought about why Chungmuro’s name is Chungmuro and its origin? The Dongguk Post has prepared an interesting story for the Donggukians who may not yet know much about Chungmuro, which we encounter the most and often.

   Chungmuro is a road in downtown Seoul, starting from the intersection of Chungmuro Station in Pil-dong, Junggu, to Gwansugyo Bridge in Cheonggye 3-ga. If you think about the name of Chungmuro, you can think of it, the origin of the name is “Chungmugong Yi Sun-shin.” When the Japanese-style road was renamed to Korean-style after Korea’s liberation, it was named after the posthumous name of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, the most famous person born near here. During the Japanese colonial era period, Chungmuro was named “Honmachi,” where many Japanese merchants entered the area and became the center of commerce for merchants. Therefore, after Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Admiral Yi Sun-shin was named on this street, showing his efforts and willingness to clean up the remnants of the Japanese colonial rule and control with his energy.

   If you have learned about the origin of the name, shall you also find out what Chungmuro is famous for? Chungmuro is also known as the road where Dongguk University is located, but it is also well known as a mecca for the film industry. In the past, there were many large movie theaters and film production companies’ offices in Chungmuro, so it became a synonym for Korean films, and large-scale events such as the Chungmuro International Film Festival were held. However, in the 2010s, the number of traditional theaters decreased significantly, and now only a few theaters, including the Daehan Theater, are maintaining their reputation.
