# Letter from. Chae-yeon

   For the last two semesters of my senior year, I chose to study in the United States (U.S.) as an exchange student. Now, it has been almost four months of staying at Valdosta State University (VSU) of Georgia, and my first semester here is almost over. It may be a short time to experience the actual life of a university student in the U.S., however, there were plenty of things I learned and felt during those four months. I feel like I took my first step toward a bigger world. 

   While studying Economics in VSU, I could perceive the difference between the lectures in the U.S. and Korea. When it comes down to it, there are quite a lot of things to do in each class. There are quizzes and assignments every week, and four exams during a semester for each class. Although I do not feel much pressure since professors consider that I am a foreigner, I still need to make an effort in my classes. Another thing that I noticed is that students participate in class so actively. They never hesitate to speak up during class, and I guess the professors do not think of it as an interruption. I could concentrate more on classes due to these atmospheres. 

   In addition, it is also different from Dongguk University in that there is no classification between major and liberal arts classes. Students can take all the classes at the university. I have seen many cases who change their major as it is easier to take other major classes and find their interest and aptitude. For me, I am taking a photography class besides economics, and I could learn many more things about taking pictures and using Photoshop that I did not know while I was a reporter for the Dongguk Post. Taking classes together with students who major in art makes me participate more actively in the class. 

   While staying at VSU, there were many opportunities to meet students from other states and countries. Especially, as there are few Asians in VSU, there are so many friends who have totally different races, nationalities, languages, and cultures. It is quite interesting to talk with them, learn and compare each different culture. One thing that I found the most interesting is that these days, Korean entertainment is so popular all around the world. There are many foreign friends who listen to Korean Pop (K-Pop), and watch Korean dramas and movies, and moreover, there are several friends who can speak and understand the Korean language. 

   To be honest, my life in the U.S. as an exchange student is so pleasing that I want to live here and try many more things. By experiencing studying abroad, visiting a variety of new places, and meeting new people, I learned that there are diversities in pictures of life. There are several things to learn more such as studies, people, and cultures. I also learned that there are many different job preferences and jobs, and there may be enough chances to try them. Even though I cannot imagine the picture of my future life so far, I got to dream of my life in a wider world.
