You are a reporter, you do not know that? That is what some friends who know I work for a newspaper said. My friends may have said it as a joke, but whenever I heard, I came to my senses. When I go out for coverage under the name of the Dongguk Post, I am not a student at Dongguk University, but a reporter who delivers the voices of students as a student representative.
Contrary to what I usually say without much meaning, what I write as a reporter in the school newspaper carries weight. Everything I write, including conversations with interviewers, school news, and news of our society, is reported in newspapers and delivered to readers. At first, I was focused on what I should deliver rather than the weight and responsibilities I had to bear as a reporter for the school insurance company. However, increasingly, I realized how important the role of reporter is in publishing newspapers, which are channels of communication between schools and students. I was worried that my carelessness would not cause unnecessary misunderstandings due to inaccurate or distorted delivery of facts, or that someone would be hurt by an article written without identifying certain facts. Whenever I faced myself with these concerns, I felt how important and difficult it was to become a reporter and write an article.
Nevertheless, the reason for continuing to write from cub reporter to editor-in-chief is simple. This is because people who were indifferent to other people’s stories can experience a different level of the world through my writings. Whenever I met interviewers and asked, understood, and learned their stories, I was able to fill in my lack. Furthermore, the fact that the finished article can be reported in the newspaper and move the student society a little bit gives another meaning. The Dongguk Post, an English newspaper, is more meaningful in that it can deliver a lot of information not only to Korean students but also to international students and exchange students. We experience a day filled with pride and accomplishment by making small changes to students by dealing with stories that have not been illuminated in the school and dealing with social issues that are issues in our writing.
People around me often ask me why I live so hard whenever I see myself writing articles with a lot of work and great responsibility. I do not know why I keep looking around for new articles in my daily life after entering the school insurance company for the past year. The responsibility that weighed on my shoulder now comes to mind as an idea, and I enjoy writing articles. This year, the Dongguk Post, which serves as the closest bridge between schools and students, will continue to move forward with more responsibility for changes in the student society.
