How Far Do You Know about the College’s Scholarship System?

   The college’s scholarship system is always at the attention for students who study hard and do various school activities. In the case of Dongguk University, it also launched a new committee in 2022, opening a new chapter in the scholarship system. As such, Dongguk University organizes scholarship systems and provides scholarships in various ways so that students can fulfill their dreams and live a happy college life. Currently, the scholarship system consists of three main types. They are the Wisdom Scholarship, the Mercy Scholarship, and the Jeongjin Scholarship. The Dongguk Post would like to find out what goals and types each scholarship has and talk about the scholarship system through interviews with students who have benefited from these scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded to students with high academic achievement

   The first scholarship to talk about is the “Wisdom Scholarship.” This scholarship aims to cultivate creative intellectuals who research and practice with creative and convergent thinking. In other words, it is a scholarship system that supports students with high academic achievement and supports various academic scholarships, students preparing for national exams, and students aiming to enter graduate school. Among the 13 scholarships for wisdom, the Dongguk Post talked with Lee Geon-yeop (Department of Chinese Language and Literature 19), who has benefited from Dongguk Human Resources Development Scholarship.

   Having received the so-called academic scholarship, he basically participated hard in school classes and made efforts to meet the credit standards. In addition, in order to meet the standards of the comparison program, he took courses from Dream PATH, participated in activities, and obtained certificates. He said, “As tuition was reduced through scholarships, I was able to relieve the financial burden. In addition, once I received a scholarship, it motivated me to participate in my studies and comparative activities with the desire to receive a scholarship next semester,” he added.

Scholarships are awarded to students who practice sharing

   The second scholarship to talk about is the “Mercy Scholarship.” This scholarship aims to foster moral leaders who contribute to the nation and human society. Therefore, national scholarship, welfare scholarship, volunteer scholarship, and Buddhist scholarship belong to this scholarship. In line with the character of a Buddhist sectarian university, it offers scholarships related to Buddhism and can benefit even if you are not a student of the department of Buddhism. We talked to Jang Hyeonji (Department of Home Education 20), who experienced in receiving the Buddhist Youth Leader Scholarship, a scholarship related to Buddhism.

   She said that she learned about the scholarship activity through Dongguk University’s scholarship website. And as it is a scholarship activity related to Buddhism, she tried to find and do many activities related to Buddhism. Also, she said, “I used this scholarship to purchase Internet lectures or textbooks needed to prepare for the appointment exam. In addition to the scholarship, I met a lot of good relationships through the activities and was able to get closer to Buddhism,” expressing satisfaction with the scholarship activities.

Scholarships are awarded to students who take the initiative

   The last scholarship to talk about is the “Jeongjin Scholarship.” The scholarship aims to foster enterprising challengers who challenge, venture, and practice enlightenment. Therefore, students who engage in overseas activities, student leadership group activities, field training, and labor activities will receive scholarships. Representative scholarships for the Jeongjin Scholarship include Exchange Student Scholarship, Overseas Academic Tour Scholarship, and Dongguk Leader Scholarship. We listened to the stories of students who received such scholarships.

   Lee Ju-won (Department of Buddhism 21), who received an exchange student scholarship, learned about the scholarship system through the exchange student support orientation. In addition, she constantly made efforts to be selected as a student to be dispatched because she could receive this scholarship at the same time as she passed the exchange student. She said, “I was a little worried because the cost of preparing for the exchange student was quite high. However, the burden was reduced because the school partially supported the tuition through the scholarship system,” and expressing her gratitude for the help she received through the scholarship.

   In addition we met Lee Bo-young (Department of Korean Education 20), who received a scholarship for overseas academic exploration. She said that she had been on an academic tour to Europe for two weeks during the summer vacation of 2022. Furthermore, she said that it was a great advantage to be able to go abroad with the support of the school and that it was an opportunity to think about her career seriously. Also, “If the school continues this scholarship, I think it will be a good opportunity and memory for students. So, I want to recommend the students to try it.” she said.

   Finally, we talked to An Jae-hwan (Department of Chinese Language and Literature 17), who served as the student president of the department and received the Dongguk Leader Scholarship. He is said to have worked hard to have a department with responsibility for a year while taking the position of the student president. He thought he received financial help through scholarships, shared some of the money with the vice president because of the nature of leader scholarships given only to student presidents, and tried to use the rest for members of the student council. In addition, he added, “It would be better if the vice president was given a leader scholarship because his efforts for the department were the result of making it with the vice president, not alone.”

   As such, there are many scholarship systems in schools, and any student who participates in campus life diligently can benefit. There is a system that helps students realize their dreams, so why do not you all recognize and use it? Information related to the scholarship system can be found on the school website, so we hope many students will know how to do it and receive many benefits while attending school.
