At some point, in Korea, “sexual crime” has become a subject of conflict between men and women. Men and women fought during the “Nth Room” incident, which caused public outrage among Koreans last year, and the “Real Person Slash (RPS)” incident, which was publicized in January this year when a petition appeared on the website of Cheong Wa Dae’s national petition. There was one reason why sexual crimes led to conflict between men and women. It was because the perpetrator’s gender was male or female. In the case of the Nth room incident, in which sadistic pornography were produced and sold by threatening numerous women, there were some people who blamed men because the perpetrators were male. On the other hand, in the case of the RPS incident, there were some people who criticized women because most of the perpetrators who wrote RPS, a kind of fan fiction based on same-sex celebrities, in a blatant level, were female. They say that since the proportion of certain gender involved in the crime is high, the generalization of the gender is inevitable. However, I do not think that is true. Is that really the right thing to do? Does blaming a certain gender makes the situation any better?
I think people who cause conflicts between men and women based on the gender of the perpetrator are very foolish and unreasonable. They claim that they are fighting for the victim, but we cannot be sure whether all of them are truly caring about the victim. Rather, such sexual crimes may seem to be a good opportunity for some people to speak ill about a particular gender. They are simply using the victims to prove superiority of one’s gender and denounce the opposite gender. However, this is not a helpful way to solve the problem. The gender of the perpetrator is not important. When focusing on the gender, the interest in protecting the victims and punishing the perpetrators will inevitably decrease. Therefore, the incident will gradually be forgotten by people, and efforts to resolve sexual crimes will not be made properly.
Even now, when men and women fight hard in every sexual crime, the victims are suffering, and the perpetrators are seeking ways not to receive the punishment. The point is, we must work together and find out ways to protect the victims and punish the perpetrators. Do not blame gender. Please, just stick to the point.
