Movie Loving Vincent

   We may think of Vincent Van Gogh as a great artist, or the poor man who cut his own ear. However, how much do we know about Van Gogh as a person? For those who do not know about Van Gogh that much, the Dongguk Post wants to introduce a movie titled “Loving Vincent.” The film depicts the journey of Armand Roulin, who was ordered by his father to deliver Van Gogh’s last letter to his brother, Theo. However, as Armand finds out that Theo passed away six months later from Van Gogh’s death, he heads to Auvers-sur-Oise to hand over the letter to Dr. Paul Gachet, who was Van Gogh’s doctor.

   At first, Armand has been indifferent to Van Gogh’s death. However, as he meets people who knew Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise and investigates about his death, he becomes increasingly sympathetic to Van Gogh’s loneliness during his lifetime. If you watch the movie and follow Armand’s journey, you will also be more interested in Van Gogh as a human being and feel pity for his unhappy life. 

   As “Loving Vincent” is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh, the film borrowed Van Gogh’s style of painting. The scenes from the past are a black-and-white version of a realistic style, but when expressing the present, it reproduces Van Gogh’s style. In addition, the places and characters that appear in Van Gogh’s works appear in the movie as they are, giving the audiences the feeling of being directly in the masterpiece. If you love Vincent Van Gogh and his painting, “Loving Vincent” is a perfect film to watch.

   Most people have memories of their childhood or youth. And these memories convey various emotions to us even after a long time. The drama recommended by the Dongguk Post is “Reply 1988,” which sent many people on a trip down memory lane. This drama was broadcasted on tvN from November 2015 to January 2016. 

   Reply 1988 is a story about the daily lives of five families living in an alley in Ssangmun-dong. This drama shows the process of friends of the same age growing up in one village and moving for the future together. In addition, the drama includes the story of not only the main characters, friends of the same age, but also their parents, brothers, and friends. It makes the drama even richer and more realistic. Another reason for recommending this drama is that we can experience the real culture of 1988 through the drama. It is no exaggeration to say that the accessories, furniture, entertainers, and events that appeared in drama were reproduced the same as they were at that time such as the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Sobangcha (a boy band), and a briquet boiler.  In this perfectly recreated 1988 background, the drama talks about the small happiness filled with the neighborly affection and the sadness of the family focusing on the general life of a normal family at that time. The content of it moved our hearts by creating a bond of sympathy with the viewers and giving them a feeling of familiarity.

   Reply 1988 gave parents healing and memories of their youth, and gave young people an opportunity to experience the past. It made people warm up regardless of generation. The Dongguk Post recommends this drama, where you can feel the affection between people directly.

   If your hobby is reading books or if you like novel stories, you may know this famous book: Metamorphosis. Since this book is so famous, many readers may already know about it. Nevertheless, the Dongguk Post wants to recommend this book to people who have not read it yet. Also, it would be good for those who already read the book to read it again. Let me tell you the reason after I introduce the story. Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of this book, find himself turning into a monstrous vermin after he wakes up. He cannot come out of his room and of course cannot go to work. Naturally, he loses his job and his family outside the room loses their financial stability. The rest of the family members worry about him at first and help him, but gradually their helping hands disappear. Rather, they express their hatred toward their son or brother.

   At first, I was shocked to see that Gregor turns into a vermin from the beginning. However, the more I read it, and the more I saw the way his family treats him, my fear toward him changed into pity. He turned into a vermin without even knowing the reason and his family turns away from him and throws stones at him.

   I think every family has “Gregor,” a man who feeds his/her family. In my opinion, Gregor’s turning into a vermin is an expression of the head of the household who has lost his/her economic ability. Even if family trusts him and waits for him at first, they cannot stand his incompetence, if the condition continues. This is the reason why I think people who have read it also should read this once again. I hope you think about it while reading this book. The saddest thing I thought while reading again was even Gregor himself is worried about going to work right away, not is turning into a vermin.

   How do you feel when you see your parents getting old? You might feel the flow of time bitter when you see the weakness of them who you always think will be young and healthy. That does not mean you had good memories with them all the time. Sometimes you may feel hatred or love of them. However, when people who feel different emotions from their parents are asked if they are prepared for parents’ death, the majority may not be able to answer immediately. To give you a time of thinking more about separation with parents, the Dongguk Post recommends a Daum webtoon, “Vacantly.”

   This webtoon calmly expresses the feelings of a daughter who lived with a father in dementia. The father, who always lived in high spirits, showed a lack of confidence due to dementia, and felt sorry for his daughter as he was causing inconvenience to her. Since it was very difficult to take care of an elderly person with dementia without help of an expert, the relationship between the father and daughter got worsened. However, after seeing her father who could not recognize his own daughter due to his deteriorated health, she learned the preciousness of him and recalled her joyful past. When the father died, she resented herself for failing to take better care of her father, who acted like a child. This webtoon, which describes what might happen in our real life, emphasizes love and affection for parents. It is highlighting that we need a mental preparation to admit our parents’ agedness and accept farewell which can happen at any time. If you are deeply concerned about taking farewell of parents, the Dongguk Post recommend you to see this webtoon. You might find an enlightenment.
