An Online Election Was Held for the First Time

  Facing the COVID-19 era, university society has changed a lot including lecture methods and the way of holding events. The election is not the exception. It was held online for the first time from November 23rd to 26th.

   Donggukians could participate in voting using their smartphones or Personal Computers (PC) via uDRIMS, Dongguk University’s renovated information management system or mobile application of Dongguk University. For students who do not have their own devices could visit the offline polling place. Since it was the first time to introduce a new voting method, a guideline regarding electioneering also changed. The offline gathering was prohibited and all electioneering had to be conducted online using Social Network Services (SNS) only after the Central Election Management Committee (CEMC) permits its SNS account.

   With online electioneering, candidates for the General Student Council (GSC) revealed their information and pledges, and there was an issue regarding the college of the candidates. One candidate for the president of the GSC was a student of the College of Applied Convergency, which has a different entrance examination from other colleges. This College selects students from Characterization High School with work experience of more than three years, and it was the cause of this issue. On Everytime, the school’s anonymous online community, there were several posts or comments, saying, “There are differences between them and us (that is, students of other Colleges) from another entrance examination,” or “Could a former worker notice what students want or what should be pushed forward?” However, more and more voices that claim they have qualifications also arose. At the same time, the other candidate was also criticized due to his College. He is a student of the Business School, and the past four presidents of the GSC were also students of it. Therefore, some pointed out that the Business School always occupies the GSC. However, the past election was conducted with a sole candidate, which reduces the complaint against the candidate’s College.

   Through this four-day election, “Doyak” was elected as the 53rd GSC. Kang Seong-woo, the president of the GSC said, “Thanks to the support and backing of Donggukians, we are able to make the GSC, ‘Doyak,’ to move toward a new Dongguk.” Their representative pledges are the abolition of the major English lectures and foreign language pass system which are inefficient in academic work and holding “Culture Day” for freshmen this year and next year. He also added, “We will make a fresh leap toward a vibrant school, a school where dreams and passion live, and for your dazzling school life.”
