The Human Rights and Welfare Department which belongs to the Student Council of the College of Education organized an event called Human Rights Graffiti, which runs from May 20th to June 4th. In general, Graffiti means pictures that are drawn on the walls and doors. However, Human Rights Graffiti is quite different. This event posted graffiti, which composed of writings, pictures, and card news all over the Haklim Hall. The main subjects of the Human Rights Graffiti event are the social weaks such as women, the disabled, sexual minorities, workers and students.
Son Hyo-jeong, the director of the Human Rights and Welfare Department stated, “The purpose of the event is to remind of human rights while looking at the graffiti around the Haklim Hall.” She added, “Some students still complain the Human Rights and Welfare Department focuses too much on the socially weak. They say it should take care of the human rights of average student who occupies a majority. I hope that by making public aware of the socially weak, it could create an atmosphere that discusses this issue freely. So I hope all Donggukians will join us to improve human rights by mentioning human rights in public.”
Lee Seung-joon (Freshman, Department of Chemistry) said, “Watching this graffiti, I realized that there were various minorities in our school. Holding such event is good for us because we can think again about the human rights.”
