Leader: [noun] A person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. This definition implies that a leader’s ability will determine the success of any particular. Since a leader represents the group, what should he or she do and what kind of qualities should a leader be equipped with.
Often, we can witness some leaders making a mistake, or even more, stir up some controversies. This situation can be seen anytime, anywhere. On August 6th, Park Kyoung-gun, the Chairperson of Emergency Planning Committee of the College of Social Science was caught in a girl’s bathroom on Dongguk campus. He stated from his apology that he was so drunk that he tried go to the bathroom. Then, somehow he ended up in a girl’s bathroom.
While it became such a huge topic, there were some other controversies going on. A majority of people had such a negative view of this incident and criticized him. Even some of them argued that he should be removed from his position. However, there were others who argued that this response was too excessive. They added that, people tend to make mistakes while they are drunk, so we should not go too harsh on him. However, perhaps a different set of standards should be applied to him since he is in charge of a group.
Leaders should never forget that their actions reflect on the groups they manage. Leaders are those whether directly or indirectly, elected by the members. Their behavior is not separate from their role as a leader. It is true that a lot of previlege are given to leaders. However, since they start with more advantages than the others, they should hold themselves to a generally higher set of standards. An organization’s failure or success truly depends on the ability and the quality of the leader. Leaders should constantly examine whether they are not missing any qualities that a leader should be equipped with. In this way, great leaders can be formed and gain the trust of others.
