Recently, one professor’s words in her class are being controversial among Donggukians. She said, in the case of sexual violence, the victims are responsible for the result of the crime, giving former provincial governer, Ahn Hee-jung as an example. Her attitude was criticized in that it is the secondary violence. As such kinds of reports are continuously revealed, movements to improve women’s rights are expanding to make women believe that they can be mentally assured by being with others’ support. Accordingly, feminist groups in our campus have expressed their opinions about the situation where women are exposed to sexual harassment.
In this atmosphere, a feminist group named “Loading (Road-ing)” was newly made in the College of Engineering for the first time. It is an exceptional case that the feminist group was also established among students who study engineering. It can be interpreted that feminism is no longer regarded as an academic field but as a generally accepted ideology. Feminism was often dealt with the certain groups of people, who are called “Feminists,” before. Feminist groups were found only in certain area such as liberal arts and social science, which are scholarly related. Therefore, expanding the scope of feminism can greatly increase the awareness among students. Thanks to this kind of change, there will certainly be more opportunities for Donggukians to learn and discuss feminism with various viewpoints.
However, as the atmosphere change is on the starting point, in order to substantially have the positive effect mentioned above, there are still things we should have our eyes on. That is, it is necessary to work in various fields actively so that majority of students of the College of Engineering can acknowledge the existence of the group. In fact, some people just view the feminists unfavorably without knowing enough about feminism. One of the causes of this is their narrow range of activity. Therefore, of course it is the same in terms of other feminist groups, they should agonize how to deal with feminism overcoming its limitation without triggering resistance to others.
