Cleaning Labor Union Protested in Front of the President Han’s Office

   On January 29th, Cleaning Labor Union of Dongguk University protested in front of the Main Hall claiming the school to turn back the number of cleaning laborers. This demonstration started from the second week of January 2018, and is ongoing on a daily basis.

   In the year of 2016, Dongguk University has already reduced the number of cleaning laborers. However, in 2018, as the eight number of cleaning people retired, the school stopped employing new cleaning laborers and did not make any effort to fill in the lacking numbers. Without any consultation between the laborers and school administration, the school determined to recruit eight working scholarship students and substitute the shortage of cleaning laborers.

   Demanding to have a face-to-face talk with president Han, the union forced to get into the main building and protested intensely, shouting out for struggle. Two people went to the hospital, including the school’s security who was carried by ambulance and the other, a student who went to the clinic after the fierce protest. In front of the President Han’s office, protesters all sat down for strike, sang a song, and shouted for their rights all together. Not even the cleaning laborers but also the students of So-dong association participated and made remarks in the protest claiming the President Han to solve this problem immediately and return the number of cleaners back.  So-dong association, which is a group of Donggukians banding together with the cleaning laborers, posted the hand-written paper in every building of the school campus and the Main Hall suggesting to supplement the cleaning personnel.

   One of the members Chae Yu-bin (Junior, College of Business Management) asserted, “The school suggested the concept ‘cleaning working scholarship’ who works from seven to nine in the morning, thus, substituting the cleaning laborers. However, it does not make sense that the student’s two hours of working can replace the existing cleaning man and woman. It means that the school is aggravating the intensity of labor and, at the same time, violating the students' right to study in the pleasant place.”

   The demonstration started at 12 P.M. and it will continue until the night and the next day as well. Yet, President Han is still not answering to the protestors and refused to communicate with the laborers with the shutters closed. For this, Kim Bi-sun, the assistant administrator of the Cleaning Labor Union, said, “We have given chance and try to comprehend the school for the last several years, however, whenever we tried to talk with President Han, this man never wants to communicate with us. He has avoided the laborers and refused to interact with us. The school is only caring about their benefit. What we only want is to get the number of eight workers back and return the working conditions as it was in the past. Then, this rally will finally come to an end.”
