A Little Bit of France

   As a French exchange student I see a lot of similarities between France and Korea. Seoul, the capital city of Korea, and Paris, the capital city of France, have lot in common.

   The first common point I noticed is the Namsan Tower and the Eiffel Tower. These two towers have  100 meter difference, but I think the fact we can see a large part of the entire city from the top of these towers is quite impressive. The Eiffel Tower is almost the center of Paris while the Namsan Tower is not. I also realized  that the Eiffel Tower is easier to access than the Namsan Tower. I need to take a long walk to go to the Namsan Tower but the Eiffel Tower is just near the subway station. Nevertheless, I am impressed by these towers, especially at nights when the lights are on and we can see these beautiful towers wherever we are in Seoul or in Paris.    

   Then for Chu-seok, I was able to find more similarities between France and Korea, when I was visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace dressed up in traditional Hanbok like Koreans. I was completely surprised when I found out that we were the only ones dressed like this. I started to explore the palace built in the fourteenth century.  The further I walked into the doors, the more I was amazed by the architecture. I have always loved ancient architecture.  If I compared Gyeongbokgung Palace with a similar palace in France, I would say the chateau de Versailles is quite alike. Although the difference between these two palaces is obvious, such as the architecture and the lifestyle, the purpose of these palaces is similar to each other. They were built for royals such as Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI for the chateau de Versailles and Taejong and Sejong for the Gyeongbokgung Palace. They were both destroyed during wars and then restored. Today they are two beautiful attractions for foreigners. They have amazing features, for example, we can see the mountain sight at the Korean palace while we cans see the beautiful garden at  the chateau de Versailles.  

   There are many differences between my home country and Korea but I could find a lot of common points between these two wonderful countries. As an exchange student, other than the language problem, I felt welcome. People say the best way to explore Paris is to get lost in the streets but in Korea we need to take the subway. I would say if you want to try street food, just walk through the night markets, which is the big difference between European countries and Asian countries. I would recommend Namdaemun where you can taste traditional Korean food such as Japchae, Ramen, Hotteok on a stick, and Redbean cakes.
