General Student Meeting Held as the “Last Warning” of Donggukians

  On October 11th, 5:30 P.M., at Manhae Plaza, the General Student Council (GSC) held theStudents’ General Meeting for the “normalization” and the “democratization” of Dongguk University.

   The meeting started to attract attention from students after the school’s hip hop club “Ajax”did a performance that showed their stance regarding  the agendas suggested by the GSC. Later at 6:30 P.M., a total of 1,321 students, comprising over one tenth of the whole school attended to the meeting which would make the voted agendas on the assembly official, by surpassing the margin number of 1,300. An Dre, the chairperson of the GSC,  said, “Thank you so much for coming and participating for the sake of the school. We have worked so hard to achieve this and now the hard work has really paid off.”

  As soon as the number was achieved, the assembly was proceeded straight into the voting on agendas. The first agenda was to decide on the suspension of President Han Taesik (Bogwang) , who reportedly had sued students out of the educational expenditures of the university. 1,336 students out of 1,344 rose up the “Agreed” sign and voted for the suspension.

   The second agenda was to vote for or against the withdrawal of the suspension of Kim Geonjung, the former vice chairperson of the GSC, which was voted for with only four disagreements. However, when it was time for the third agenda, which was about the formation of a management committee made up of both faculties and students, some students decided to leave the plaza. Although the agenda was voted for, 1313 were left andmore participants started to leave.

   Consequently, the following fourth and fifth agendas were postponed to the next meetingas only 1,181 remained.At the same time, lines of students were flocking their way out of theplaza. Thus, the two agendas: demanding a democratic process in the university’s presidentialelection and asking for responsibilities for the school’s rough and ready promotion on the “Lifelong Education College Plan” were invalidated for this year’s meeting.

   After the Students’ General Meeting was concluded the GSC and a group of students trailed to the Main Hall to make the “final judgement” on President Han. Students stuck red colored stickers on the closed shutters of the Main Hall as a meaning of “red cards” to the president. “It is a historic moment, and I hope it will contribute to the normalization and the democratization of Dongguk University,” said Jo Hyunji (Junior, Political Science and Diplomacy), who took part in the action.

   Meanwhile, on October 7th, the school noticed that the ground of the plaza will be repaired from October 10th to 14th. The GSC immediately reacted as they stated that this was a deliberate sabotage from the school and were given clearance for use on the 11th. The GSC also announced that the school had notified professors not to accept any absence papers submitted by the participants of the meeting. However, the faculty of the Student Affairs said, “The repair has been scheduled about a month ago while the GSC got a permission to use the plaza on October 5th. Plus, accepting the absence papers for the participants is against the law of Anti-bribery and graft act.”
