“Women can be raped, because they wear shorts and hang around during the night.” This is what I saw when some male suspects justified their malicious behavior. Women, especially Koreans, are living in a society where male’s fault is due to female’s carelessness. Until now, women have endured various inequalities from men; thus, women have tried hard to overcome their difference and to obtain equal status to those of male’s. However, despite women’s hard work, women still experience inequalities compared to men. Various accidents happening in Korea apparently indicates the necessity of women to overcome their status.

During my university life, I have heard and experienced various patriarchs. In the General Student Council election, the candidates were only men; women were not directly involved in. While drinking, male students easily took female students to their home to have a relationship. Moreover, I have easily seen how a male severely ignores either fat or ugly female students. For the prevention of this, students often form a group to go against the inequality and to protect women’s rights; but reality is that nothing changes. Still, every month, male students’ raping issue becomes a hot topic in social network media.

Women’s status has become a problem not only in present universities, but also has been in historical matters and popular cities. This year, two apparent patriarch accidents occurred: Gangnam station murder issue and enforced sex slaves. In  Gangnam station, a female university student was murdered with the reason that female ignored male. Even though the woman had never maliciously ignored the suspect, that horrible incident happened. This indicates that majority of male still indirectly think that male is over female.

Japanese government keeps trying to cover their sex slaves issue by compensating with money, without any sincere apology. Even though old Korean women, who were assaulted as sex slaves by Japanese soldiers, never agreed to money compensation and rather annoyed by that mention, Korean government agreed to Japanese governments’ offer. Women’s trial to announce their inequality and miserable experiences has been refused by the society that still values male’s status.

As mentioned above, especially from the sight of a university student, women’s status is too weak. Few people insist that too many feminist movements are hanging around in the society. However, if feminist movements were happening enough, then criminals like sexual harassment including rape should have been decreased. Comparably, the number of patriarchs is more than that of feminists. Currently, the reality is the increase of sexual harassment; the number of victims is gradually increasing.

The present society is a place that values the equality of gender. However, honestly, majority of victims suffering from inequality and harassment are women. As a seesaw cannot work when two sides do not balance, men and women also have to consider and value each other to reach the optimal (medium) point. Under the assumption that feminists do not take radical actions, at this point where women possess weak status, feminists’ movements may be one way to balance the whole society and to prevent further harassment. Feminists should have more talk with men to make the atmosphere where male and female are respected equally.
