The General Student Council (GSC) held a press conference regarding the case of President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang) and the Lifelong Education College Support Plan in front of the National Assembly building, on August 26th, at 11:00 A.M.
An Dre, the chairperson of the GSC started the conference with a short summary of Dongguk University’s current situation. He explained that students have been holding a cooperative gathering opposing to the Lifelong Education College Support Plan since August 10th. Also, he added that the conflict related to President Han’s plagiarism is still ongoing between the students and the school authority. After his speech, representatives of the cooperative gathering, the General Student Council of Graduate School, the Dongguk Promotion Committee for the Future (DPC) gave their comments.
The chairperson of the General Student Council of Graduate School, Shin Jung-wook exclaimed that the main problem of President Han is his neglect of communication with students. “President Han is trying his best to avoid meeting with students. He did not even show his face at the graduation ceremony the previous day,” he said.
Park Kyoung-gun, the chairperson of the College of Political Science and Diplomacy who is taking part in the cooperative gathering stated his opinion about the Lifelong Education College Support Project. He said, “The students of my college have to move to another building to take major courses since there are not enough classrooms at the hall of College of Social Science. If the Lifelong Education College Support Plan takes place, the lack of infrastructures will get worse.”
Concerning the same topic, Jo Yoon-gi, a member of the DPC stated, “During the gathering, the school faculty abused the students’ rights by using verbal and physical violence. I hope the Ministry of Education pay more attention to how students are treated in school.”
Later, the GSC went inside the National Assembly building to have a meeting with the members of the National Assembly. The purpose of the meeting was to call for a parliamentary inspection of the Ministry of Education and the embroilment in Dongguk University.
