The lecture given by Frank Fair who is a professor of Sam Houston State University, USA was held by Research Affairs of DU in a seminar room of Dahyang Hall on Oct. 25. Its title was "Buddhism Seen from A Western Perspective."
This lecture was processed by translation of Prof. Kim Young-min in the Dept. of English Lang. & Lit. About 30 students participated in this lecture.
Prof. Frank Fair started his lecture with an answer to how he became involved with these issues. "I came first to the subject of the relations between science and religion by learning about the interaction between Greek philosophical ideas and Christianity. So, I had to deal with the question of how science and religion might interact. This brought me into contact with the work of the eminent Japanese Buddhist scholar, Masao Abe." He also gave a lecture on the subtitles, "Buddhism and Modern Science," "Difficult Conflicts between Modern Science and Traditional Christianity and Traditional Buddhism."
He finished the lecture as saying, "Thank you for the invitation to come and talk with you." At the end of this lecture, a participant said, "This was very meaningful time to know Western perspective about Buddhism. I always wondered the issues."
