Dongcham 18th, Completed Overseas Volunteer Work in Vietnam

   The Dongcham 18th Overseas Volunteer activities in Vietnam have been successfully completed. At the end of 2019, our university has been doing overseas volunteer work online due to COVID-19. However, as COVID-19 gradually eased, volunteers went to the site for the first time in three years. Therefore, the Dongguk Post covered the Dongcham 18th in overseas volunteer work on behalf of the school.

   They were dispatched to Vietnam’s Guang Nam Province Tam Ky region and international lotus village for a total of nine nights and ten days from January 5th to January 14th. It mainly conducted educational services at Hangeul Institute and the nursery home. It is said that the Dongcham 18th held a volunteer preparation meeting. Also they had time to understand the differences in culture, race, and social norms of other countries by providing pre-education on basic literacy education, local language education, Korean language education, and safety education. Through this, meaningful cultural exchanges were possible with students who participated in the volunteer and Vietnam students and teachers.

   They were divided into four groups: education group, cultural exchange group, effort group, and support group. First, the education group prepared classes to introduce Korea based on Korean language education. The cultural exchange group also conducted educational services through Korean culture classes and prepared exchange activities with the Tam Ky Youth Corps. Next, the effort group carried out mural work in the International Lotus Village and environmental repair work in poor areas, and finally, the support group helped without any mistakes when volunteering by preparing and packaging necessary items in advance.

   Volunteers took the initiative in planning education and presented various programs for students at Hangeul Institute and children at Ducksan nursery. The Hangeul Institute mainly conducted classes for middle and high school students and office workers. Volunteer activities such as experiencing traditional Korean games and food, learning Korean, and learning Korean children’s songs were conducted. The activity was composed of an interesting subject education by conducting various hands-on activities at the same time and received a great response from local students. In addition to educational services, cultural exchanges with the Tam Ky Youth Corps were also conducted. They strengthened their friendship through sports such as soccer and tugof-war and exchanged culture with local students through local food experiences and literary performances in Vietnam. In addition, activities such as painting murals, planting trees, and doing medical volunteer work were also carried out.

   This overseas volunteer program was meaningful in that it was planned and operated in a form that could foster a sense of community and participation based on organic collaboration with the Korean Language Institute. It is also noteworthy that the students participating in the volunteer work planned and prepared the overall educational content by themselves. Jeong Min-seok (Department of Korean Literature and Creative Writing 17), who served as the team leader, said, “While preparing for about a month and a half before departure, it was not easy to carry out the massive amount of preparation, but the volunteer work was rewarding enough to survive when I arrived there.” Finally, he thanked the Dongcham 18th who did not lose a smile and cheered despite the difficult situation.
