The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup is arguably the most prominent competition in international men’s football. Qatar was awarded the host of this tournament in 2010 by FIFA. However, the nation has been under harsh criticism for several things, such as its lack of infrastructure, hot climate and most especially its human rights record.
First of all, Qatar has faced criticism for the way treating migrant workers. According to several reports, Human Rights Watch has accused the country of “forced labor” and “exploitation.” The Qatar government has responded to these accusations claiming it is improving conditions for immigrant workers. In addition, the government has established a “fund to help family” to aid families of workers who died during the construction of the facilities needed for the World Cup.
Another concern is Qatar’s infrastructure. An estimated cost of 45 billion dollars has been set aside for the construction of eight new stadiums but critics say that hotel accommodation problems have not been resolved. There are also claims that Qatar invests more money in the World Cup than in improving the lives of its citizens.
Lastly, the climate condition remains a concern to many people. According to reports, temperatures can rise to over 40 degrees Celsius in summer. The climatic issue made FIFA reschedule the World Cup from summer to winter. By moving it to winter, the World Cup matches have affected other competitions which made football fans around the world upset.
Despite the criticism that Qatar has faced, preparations are still ongoing for the World Cup. It remains a mixed feeling around the world as people cannot wait for the start of this prestigious sporting event, however, concerns about infrastructure still linger.
