Recently, digital sexual crimes, including the Nth case, are drawing attention as a major problem. Jeon, the sophomore of Dongguk University, said, “I saw that the ages of the major criminals who ran the telegrams in the Nth room case were college students like me, and I realized that it is impossible to distinguish whether they are criminals or not by their appearance. I started to worry about the presence of such criminals in our university.” As such, many students have been worried whether our school is a safe place or not. However, on April 29th, 2020, Dongguk University relieved students from these worries by signing a “WE CARE” business agreement with Seoul Jungbu Police Station.
The “WE CARE” business agreement is aimed at establishing a cooperative system and an infrastructure of public order so that social underdog such as women can live safely in the region. 12 organizations including Dongguk University, Soongeui Women’s University and Seoul Jungbu Sunflower Center participated in this agreement centering around Seoul Jungbu Police Station. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the business agreement ceremony was held as an online video conference. The representatives of each organizations who attended the business agreement discussed various countermeasures to realize a safe society for women. Do Jun-su, the chief of Seoul Jungbu Police Station, expected that organizations in various fields will provide customized security services for local resident by cooperating each other with this business agreement.
The Human Rights Center of Dongguk University said, “The police force had limitations in responding to diversified and intelligent trend of crimes such as the ‘Telegram Sexual Exploitation Case.’ Therefore, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Seoul Jungbu Police Station and other institutions was conducted to have a sense of community by encouraging pan-national interest and participation in various institutions and communities.” They added that the main cooperation plans related to Dongguk University are to provide customized security services, including special patrols around single households and studio apartments, inspection of illegal shooting in school toilets and prompt action in emergency situations.
Jeon said, “The ‘WE CARE’ business agreement will ensure the safety of the students who live alone. There are many alleys around our school, and it is not safe to walk around at night because it is quite dark. Therefore, if patrols work, students like me will be able to live a safer life. In addition, I expect that students will relieve anxiety about sexual exploitation cases.”
