Meet the Newly Refurbished Paljeongdo

   The construction work on the Paljeongdo landscape improvement began on October 28th last year and was completed on December 16th. The construction, which began with the request of members of our university and visitors from outside, consisted of the removal of existing grass and boundary wood, the installation of water-friendly spaces and artificial landscaping, and the installation of mooring facilities and fountains.

   The university’s facility team explained the reason for the construction saying, “The water-friendly space makes people feel comfortable and many people prefer the sound of the water.” They added, “I heard that people who went to school in the past when there was a fountain, missed the fountain facilities and that some students talked about the need for a waterfront. Moreover, many people said Paljeongdo, which is the central space of the university, looks barren because there is no waterfront.” Some students raised concerns that the construction might lead to the removal of the existing elephant statues, but the original statues were left intact. Also, a new waterfront with water flowing like a small stream around the statues was created.

   In addition to the waterfront, mountain-shaped artificial landscape architecture which is about the height of the statue, was installed behind the elephant statues. The construction has improved the deterioration of the existing facilities as well as the Paljeongdo landscape. The boundary wood around the elephant statues was removed and a new seating wall was installed to compensate the defects.  Kim Seo-yeon, a junior of Division of Korea Language&Literature and Literature and Creative Writing, said, “The circular bench before repair was very uncomfortable to use, not only because some parts were broken, but also there were rotten parts. However, through the construction, I think it would be more pleasant for us students to use,” expressing hope for improvements of the Paljeongdo facility.

   The construction has attracted a lot of attention from students at our school as it is believed to have improved convenience and aesthetic qualities while maintaining the symbolism of the university all at the same time. Sim Yeon-ju, a senior of Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, said, “From the time I entered the school, there have been the elephant statues in Paljeongdo, which are the symbol of the school, but I felt sad because I thought that the construction would take away my memories of Paljeongdo. However after the construction, I visited Paljeongdo again and found out that the elephant statues were still there and the fountain was installed additionally, which seemed to make a better harmony than before. I think I will feel good whenever I pass by there from now on.”
