Ordinary Lie / Lee Su-yeon

   Exhibition “Ordinary Lie” is currently being held at Seoul Museum and it ends on February 16th, 2020. “Ordinary Lie” focuses on the act of lying. To put in detail, it is telling us “how lie functions in our relationships.” Also, it tells us what we believe as truth is actually a huge lie. I normally do not enjoy exhibition of paintings because I do not feel anything while seeing them. However, from beginning to end of the “Ordinary Lie,” I was very excited to see creative approaches of artists toward “lie” and could not help taking pictures of almost all artworks in order to recall their intentions anytime. I would like to briefly introduce some artworks so that people have interests in this exhibition. The first one is “Horn.” It is a stop motion animation. Most of us are afraid of being departed from the standard custom or frame. “Horn” gives us a message that “Being different from others accounts to nothing.” It sounds threadbare in words. However, since the animation is a little rough and understandable, its message came straightforwardly to me and gave a big relief. The second is “Being born early in the year,” which refers to people who entered school ahead of other age-mates because of early birthday. The artist combined two animals of twelve zodiac animals and created a new animal to visualize Korea’s special culture, “Being born early in the year,” which is abolished in 2002. It was so fun to me since I think considering age regarding how early he/she was born is meaningless.I wish people who are looking for a fresh exhibition attend the “Ordinary Lie.” Also, since Seokpajeong is located above the exhibition, I really recommend enjoying beautiful fall leaves there even if we are facing winter now.

Drama

Anne with an "E" / Lee Da-young

   We sometimes think of fairy tales we read when we were a child. Such fairy tales and cartoons evoke beautiful memories and nostalgia. In 2017, Netflix made “Anne of Green Gables” into a drama. The Dongguk Post recommends this drama. If you see a short preview of the drama, you will love it. That is because the synchronization of Anne, in the cartoon, and Anne, in the drama, is almost 100 percent. We all know the song of Anne. “Freckle, skinny and red hair Anne~” As described in the lyrics, Anne in the cartoon has freckles and red hair. The main actor, who plays Anne in the drama also has freckles and red hair like the character. Therefore, you will be more immersed in the drama and fall in love with “lovely” Anne like the lyrics. Another reason I recommend this drama is Anne’s adorable and rich word and action. You will notice right away that she likes to act and makes beautiful and rich expressions. When she is alone, she plays a situation play. Also, when she reads a book in the classroom, she reads as if she were the protagonist of a novel with all her passion. These makes her look cute and it would be remarkable to see her growing up so brave, since she has a painful past and always gets people’s attention mixed with prejudice. She was abused and ostracized at a nursery, and even after she was adopted, she was criticized by classmates and townspeople, since she was an orphan and a girl. Nevertheless, she overcomes it with courage and the help of her surroundings, even if sometimes she is exhausted and collapsed. This is the last reason I recommend it.

   It might give you strength when you watch this drama in which Anne, who was born as a weak person in an unfair world, lives hard. Also, it will remind you of the animation that you saw when you were young and will make you absorbed in memory of childhood. The Dongguk post hopes you to focus on Anne and Gilbert’s cute love stories that often appear in drama, too, and be healed.

Book

Something Needs to Change / Cho Moon-kyung

   When you first look at the title of this book, you may not understand what the author is asking you to change. However, The Dongguk Post would like to recommend this book because it sends a message to everyone in the present day. This book describes the people whom an American pastor met while climbing the Himalayas and what he felt when he saw the scenery of life there. You can think of it as similar to a diary. The people in villages of the Himalayas in the book really are living a life that we have never seen in our lives. What is more surprising is that the whole experience of this book is a true story. No one will ever stop thinking about the changes in his/her life after reading this book. The team assembled to climb the Himalayas is all made up of people serving in the spirit of service and sacrifice. However, are these people simply participating in this tracking because they are great? Reading this book, I felt that it was not. I believe that seeing them in person, not just hearing about the poor people indirectly, will give a wish to anyone in the world for the act of sacrifice to anyone in the world. This book contains some really amazing stories.

   In the book, the children who live in high mountains and die from lack of water come out. Also, there are people who have lost their eyes from a simple disease since there is no hospital. In addition, many girls are sold as sexual slavery since they are living in extreme poverty and their family do not know about the fact. Thankfully, I was born in Korea and did not know that these things were still happening at the same time. On the other hand, I could not stop crying while I was reading the book. It was a real shock. There is still this lack of resources in the world, and people are dying of this nonsense. Most of children die before they reach the age of 10. Is this something we can imagine ourselves, worrying about food waste because there is so much to eat? It is a world we live in together.

   Of course, this does not mean that you should make donations right away and do some overseas volunteer work. However, I think we can at least think about what we can do for these people during our life time. I am also worried about my life and living only for my success. So, I got many challenges reading this book. Like me, I want you to read this book and think about where to put the value of your life. I also hope that you may be eager to think about what good influence you can have in your life.

Movie

The Intern (2015) / Kwon Min-jeong

   The movie The Dongguk Post wants to introduce is “The Intern, 2015.” The main character of this movie, Ben Whittaker, is a 70-year-old senior left alone after he lost his wife early. Ben is just an ordinary senior that can be seen easily in society. Even though he has retired from DEX One, the company he worked for, he always looks for something to do. Then, he gets to see a flyer saying that a company is looking for senior interns. Ben decides to apply for the company, About The Fit, a fast-growing e-commerce fashion startup in Brooklyn. Ben is hired among the applicants. The CEO of the company, Jules Ostin had previously agreed on a community outreach program where seniors would intern at the company but Jules has totally forgotten about it since she is so busy. Jules is not even pleasured about it saying she does not like seniors. Then, Ben is assigned to work with Jules, who is somewhat skeptical about it at first. Ben is excited about his new work. However, no one gives him work. Moreover, Jules tries to send Ben to another department. Nevertheless, Ben never gets frustrated and tries harder to prove that he is helpful to the company. Ben tries to stand by Jules’s side helping with her work as her intern. Through Ben’s effort, Jules starts to open her mind to Ben and they get to have deep conversation and become closer to one another. Jules gets advice from Ben and together, they show great work performance.

   This movie gives a lesson about how two different generations can cooperate and be helpful to each other. It is a good example of showing how the elderly and the young can harmonize together. I want to end by introducing two famous lines from the movie. “Experience does not age. Experience is never out of date.” Like Jules’ feeling at first in the movie, many young people can feel uncomfortable with older people. However, if we throw off prejudice about them and try to get along together, there must be something you can learn from them since they have much more experience than we do. Another line is “Love and work, work and love! That is what life is all about.” Here, the object of love is not limited to people. The movie wants to say you that the best thing is loving what you like the most and carrying on with the goals you have set.
