The Beauty Contest Following the Tide of the Times

   The 2019 finals of the 32nd World Miss University (WMU) in Korea were held on September 3. These days, the popularity of the beauty contest is not the same as in the past, as the social atmosphere has changed due to controversy over the tendency of beauty contests to emphasize only outward appearances. However, the beauty contest “World Miss University” is a remarkable competition. It is a competition that selects a peace delegation representing Korea, and it is held with the aim of selecting a world student peace volunteer delegation.

   Also, the WMU contest is an event to celebrate the World Peace Year, which was designated by the United Nations in 1986. Therefore, the WMU, which selects the peace delegation, can be seen as a beauty contest suitable for this era in that it evaluates one’s own personality and intelligence rather than external beauty. With this in mind, The Dongguk Post interviewed Kim Young-hyun, a student applicants of the 32nd Korean competition.

Q. Please introduce yourself.

 A. Hello, I am Kim Young-hyun, a senior in Dongguk University. I major in Korean Language & Literature and Creative Writing. I am an aspiring student who wants to be an announcer and who loves to use the right words, good words, and Korean. Actually, I would like to be a special book-writing announcer, so I am participating in the publication of several books at our school club. I am a person also who wants to give positive energy to people and be a good influence.

Q. What made you participate in this contest?

A. For the 32nd WMU contest, I applied not only to convey beauty through visual imagery, but also to promote my positive energy, action, and influence. In addition, it was recommended I participate by a superior at DUTV, which is Dongguk University’s video news channel. She made it to the finals last year, and she told me that it was a gift to meet various people and experience many things. Upon closer examination, I chose this contest because I thought it would be a good way to volunteer in society and improve my inner self.

Q. What was the hardest part of preparing for the competition?

A. The most difficult part was not only managing outward appearances, but also internal features, such as the knowledge and effort to build virtue. There is a forum on various topics such as the environment, economics, and so on. In this process there were difficult topics for me to study, such as current events and news. I had to organize my thoughts.

Q. What did you learn from the contest?

A. I  was able to think about the true meaning of beauty. In today’s society, where we invest a lot of money in self-creating and decorating, we think the standard of beauty is only influenced by the outer parts of the face, the body and so on. However, I have learned that beauty also comes out of the human interior and is important. Through the process of this contest, I also learned that the basic premise should be to foster a willingness to give up and sacrifice oneself for others, to help our neighbors in need, and to serve them with a spirit of peace.Furthermore, I learned how to do better PR by knowing exactly who I am. Self-introduction is required during the screening process and a self-introduction video must be uploaded to the Internet for voting as well. So I learned a lot about myself by organizing self-introductions and making videos.

Q. How do you feel about being in the contest?

A. I was happy to make it to the contest. I want to do my best in every moment with a sense of responsibility at all times in my future work. Since it was my honor to be chosen as the 32nd Korean representative, I would like to take the lead in promoting Korea to the world and fulfill my duty as a peace delegate that combines intelligence, virtue, and health.

Q. If you were to represent the world, what would you most like to prepare for?A. I would try to promote Korea. I would like to share my vision towards a global dream as well as a domestic one, and discuss important issues in the world. Also, while serving, I want to let the world know that Korean students are different and unique in different ways. I would like to be prepared with a versatile look and learn English, as it is important to communicate with people of various nationalities.

Q. What are your future plans?

A. The most important thing is to take care of the inside. I think a person’s personality is a butterfly effect. So I want to make a wing that smells like the scent of flower. I am going to practice looking at the world in a warmer light, such as not hating, not arguing, not being greedy. Also, I will study current events and prepare my talents for the forum. I practiced hard because I planned to play the flute, which I learned when I was young. 

Q. Please give some advices to the next applicants of World Miss University.

A. This contest is an opportunity to meet many good people who live hard in their dreams. I think it is a competition where we can learn what each other can do, share what we can do, and grow inside. Try to be the main character of the 33rd World Miss University, too! It will be a good experience and a happy memory.

Q. Tell me how you feel about the interview.

A. Thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. As a representative of the 32nd World Miss University, I will do my best to be a good person in the forefront of beauty, knowledge, and mind, and a diligent volunteer for peace.
