On Dongguk University “Everytime,” the mobile application used by Donggukians to share their opinions and make a schedule, one article was posted criticizing the manual “How to avoid hidden cameras?” This manual was made by the National Police Agency and distributed by the Human Rights Center. This post was even put up as the most popular article in real time. It contended that saying to “avoid” the hidden cameras might seem to be enforcing victims to beware of cameras. Also, since the cameras are hidden, those cannot be avoided. Instead, hidden cameras should not be used.
Amid the controversy, on May 10th, the General Student Council (GSC), the General Coed Student Council (GCSC), and Human Rights Center had a meeting to discuss new plans of Human Rights Center. Lee So-dam, the counsellor of Human Rights Center, said “Actually, we were going to revise the regulation and planned to proceed a lot of events this year. But we thought it would be better to apply students’ opinion in the revision. While we were looking for the way to listen to students, the GCSC examined our plan in detail. So we met the GSC and the GCSC.”
According to the outline of plans which was settled in the meeting, the center introduced changes in various aspects. During summer vacation, several projects will be in progress. First, they are trying to enhance the accessibility. A Kakaotalk account was already made late in May. An Internet Homepage will be made and educational contents will be uploaded periodically. Further, to improve monitoring function, the center will meet impaired students for a start. Then, DU Rights, a human rights supporters group, composed of Donggukians, and the GSC will consistently convey opinions from students.
Besides, the center worked on some activities for the spring festival “Kkumkkiri.” With the help of the Seoul Crisis Intervention Center for Women and Children and Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, they prevented the crime and provided counselling, too. Lee So-dam added, “Our center will continue to cooperate with the intervention center and police agency. We will also make sure students would get some help when the incident occurs.” To support all these movements, the steering committee will take place soon and discuss the revision of regulations.
