“Youth, Be Healthy,” Cancer Prevention Talk Concert; Good Contents But Regrets Remained

  On November 15th, the Cancer Prevention Talk Concert “Youth, Be Healthy” was held in the Main Hall, co-hosted with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Cancer Center, and the General Student Council (GSC). Celebrities from various fields who are the ambassadors of cancer prevention including the enterpriser and chef Chang Jin-woo, psychiatrist Yang Jae-jin, illustrator Yang Kyung-soo, and the guests, including comedian Jung Beom-kyun, and singer Yu Seung-woo participated in the concert. As many celebrities from each area came, the contents were rich but regrets also remained.

   With the lead of Jung Beom-kyun, Chang Jin-woo first came up on the stage. He started the talk of his lonely childhood and brave choices he made such as being a photographer with no relation with his major, Korean Traditional Music, and quitting jobs when he lost interests in them. He said, “Others could think of my actions irresponsible. However, I want to tell you that if you want to live your desired life, you should be bold and give up what you are not interested in. Do not be afraid of giving up. For the success, you need lots of abandonment.”

   Following that, Yang Jae-jin made a speech about stress and self-esteem, which are closely related to the youth. He emphasized two ways to be free from stress: “Self-monitor yourself” and “Find your own way to get rid of stress.” He also mentioned, “Recently, people focus too much on their appearance. This is the problem of lack of self-esteem. According to the research, people earn self-esteem the most when they feel they are being helpful.” Therefore, he suggested to do some volunteer works. Also, illustrator Yang Kyung-soo gave students the message, “Challenge new things.” He is the one who became the top of the world by challenging what no one ever did. He drew his own unique Buddhist art and is one of the best in Buddhist art worldwide. After an hour of the speeches, the performance of the singer Yu Seung-woo and prize lottery followed.

   Though this talk concert had diverse events, it gave some confusion since the speeches seemed to be irrelevant to the cancer prevention. Furthermore, compared to the preparation of the concert, low attendance of Donggukians left regrets. Accordingly, there was a fun situation that most of the students received the prize without winning the lottery. Yoon Yeong-ji, the vice chairperson of the GSC, commented, “There were some difficulties since this concert was held in cooperation with the ministry and it was hard to proceed with our own supervision. Also, due to the late hour and less related topic with students, we think it would have made some shortages.”
