Showing Harmony with Others in Dongguk Festival

   To celebrate the upcoming season, Dongguk University recently tried several things to make the festival not limited for drinking alcohol but for the one that everybody can enjoy various activities. This autumn festival was basically about harmonizing with people since the Donggukians made interactions  themselves and with others in the Seo-ae Culture Street. On top of this, the students not only made interactions with their neighborhoods but also with students of Konkuk University. However, with the joy of festival, discomforts still existed. During three days of festival, The Dongguk Post explored the festivals of Dongguk and interviewed several students and citizens to know about the mood of the festival.

Diverse attempts on the festival and various reactions from students   

   From September 20th to 21st, “Olympus in Neunggeum Festival” was co-hosted by the Student Council of the College of Social Science and “Hola,” a school club planning festivals. In this autumn festival, various attempts have been made including outdoor movie screening, flea market, archery game, busking, and the DJing festival named “Rose Garden.”

   On the first day, outdoor movie screening called “Apple Movie All Night” took place in front of the lobby of the College of Social Science from 7:00 P.M. to 3:00 A.M. The movies played were “Begin Again,” “The Conjuring 2,” “Zootopia,” and “Inception.” Ko Dae-hyeong (Freshman, Department of International Trade) said, “I really liked the air mat since it was very comfortable but some of them went flat. Also, in the midnight it was so cold that I wished to have a blanket.” Furthermore, food trucks in front of the Paljungdo offered ten percent discount for the students of the College of Social Science. As such, “Olympus in Neunggeum Festival” had various events.

   However, some of the events brought out negative reactions. Busking and “Rose Garden” festival which was held on the second day in front of a lobby of the Building of Social Science started from 1:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. each. A number of students complained of the big noise since many students were taking lectures while these festivals went along. On the “Dongguk Bamboo Forest,” a Facebook page where the students of Dongguk University share their thoughts, there were lots of negative opinions saying that the sound of both events interrupted the classes. Furthermore, one of the students attending the College of Social Science mentioned, “Although the windows were all closed, the sound was so loud that the professor even stopped the lecture for a while. I had some trouble concentrating on the lecture, too.”

   On the last day of the autumn festival, “Seo-ae Culture Street’s Blue Night” was held in cooperation with the Federation of Seo-ae Culture Street Merchant. The traffic was controlled from Paris Baguette to Hotel Atti from 2:00 P.M. This festival provided many entertainments such as visible radio, busking, lanterns, and performances by school band. There were some reactions saying it seems that the participation of students and residents has increased compared to that of last year. Jang Soo-young, a resident who came with her family said, “Actually, I participated in this festival last year. I think it became much better because this year, there are variety of things to enjoy.”

   Although many residents seemed to enjoy the festival, the opinions of the performance stages were divided. Since the performances and busking were proceeded at the same time, Jang Jae-young, one of the residents, mentioned,  “It was hard to concentrate on one performance. Also, turning down the volume was needed because it was a bit noisy to enjoy other things.” On the contrary, Kwak Woo-geun, a merchant who participated in the festival, said he opened the entrance door because he saw lots of satisfied customers listening to the music while waiting for food. Even though, there were some opinions opposing to the festival, students and residents commonly mentioned that it has been much stabilized than last year. 

Building a unity with students of Konkuk University

   On September 24th, students of Accounting Major had a joint sports day with the College of Business Administration of Konkuk University. This was a special occasion since Dongguk University never held a joint sports day with other universities. The joint sports day became an opportunity to interact with students of another university.

   Choi Ju-hee (Freshman, Business Administration) of Konkuk University said, “It was good to meet new people at the school and was having a great time with various activities.” Just as she said from the interview, there were various activities proceeded. The joint sports day started with the opening ceremony. The students also had football and basketball games, various activities such as relay race and tug of war, then ended with awards ceremony. Like her, everybody seemed to enjoy the sports day. Another student Lee Seo-hyeon (Freshman, Accounting Major) added, “I have hoped for this kind of sports day from long ago. If there is another chance for the joint sports day, I will surely participate in the event.”

   James Ahn, the president of Accounting, said, “We had a wish that we could have an opportunity to interact with students of Konkuk University. If it is possible, we are willing to proceed with this event. Furthermore, not only for a major to major, we would like to expand the scale to the university to university sports day.” He added, “Although preparing for this was fun, there were some hardships such as schedule conflict and low participation rate. However, everybody seemed to have fun. Also, the president of Business Administration of Konkuk University and I changed each other’s school Tee-shirts as a meaning of integration.”

   As various events were attempted in this autumn festival, there were positive but also negative responses from students and some residents. However, it is meaningful enough that the students had chances to participate in lots of events and to have interactions with local residents and other university students.

   Choi In-jae, the communication director of the Student Council of the College of Social Science, said, “After the festival, we receive lots of positive feedbacks from students. However, as we could not have considered the noise problem, we will make an effort to plan for better festival next time.”
