The GSC Held a General Student Representatives’ Meeting

   On October 26th, at 6:30 P.M., at Duck-am Seminar Room, the General Student Council (GSC) held a “General Student Representative’s Meeting” to address the two remaining agendas from the 10/11 Students’ General Meeting.

   The meeting was delayed for about 45 minutes as it had not met the margin of 46 participants, which was obligatory to make the meeting official. At 7:14 P.M., 48 chairpersons of different departments made it to the seminar room and the GSC announced the official start.  

   On the first part of the meeting, An Dre, the chairperson of the GSC, reported the GSC’s past activities regarding student festivals projects, from June 2016 to the recent 10/11 General Student Meeting. They also thanked the students for participating in the 10/11 General Student Meeting and apologized for their “insufficient progress” during the meeting. 

   Then the meeting was moved on to the second part where the GSC and the representatives discussed about the two remaining agendas from October 11th. The remaining first agenda was about changing the current rules of the Dongguk University’s recommendation committee of candidates for the university president. The current number of students in the committee was two, including one undergraduate and one graduate student. 

   The participants agreed to raise the students’ number into seven but Park Moon-soo, the chairperson of General Representative Council, questioned how the seven students were going to be selected. The GSC responded that the details of the selection process will be confirmed after a meeting with the school. The agenda was passed with 40 representatives voting for and eight abstaining.  

   The second remaining agenda was about demanding responsibilities for the school’s rough and ready promotion on the “Lifelong Education College Plan”. Chairperson An stated that they had a meeting with the members of the Office of Student Service, and received information about the specific promotion process of the “Lifelong Education College Plan.” “The Office of Student Service explained that, starting from next year’s January, a professor will be selected for each of the new majors. The location of the new majors’ facilities will be confirmed on this year’s December, among the three candidates which are The Academic Cultural Center, Myengjin Hall and Hyehwa Hall,” addressed Chairperson An. 

   Kim Jung-yeon, the chairperson of the North Korean Studies Department, maintained that the current administration process of the Lifelong Education College which selects students by judging only from the students’ files is too vague and risks damaging the fairness of Dongguk University’s administration process. Chairperson An agreed and replied that the opinion will be discussed during the meeting with the school. The agenda was passed with 44 representatives voting for, one voting against and four abstaining.

   The meeting was concluded at 9:00 P.M. after the free discussing session. The official date of the meeting with the school for the discussions about the passed two agendas has not been confirmed.
