On October 20th, 1:00 P.M., at Paljungdo, the General Student Council (GSC) held a press conference for the protection of human rights of the Dongguk University students.An Dre, the chairperson of the GSC, addressed that the university is not responding appropriately regarding the recent cases: the controversial behavior of professor Kim at the Namsan Dormitory and the sexual harassment of the professor from the Media Communication Major.
To this regard, the GSC has demanded more participation of the students in the current Center for Human Rights of Dongguk University and a reoccurrence prevention of such cases where students’ human rights are neglected. They also demanded the suspension of the professors and changes in the regulations of the Center for Human Rights.
“At first I thought that highlighting such cases would cause another offend to the victims,” said Jung Min-ju, the chairperson of the College of Education. “However, if we keep on ignoring these cases, the students would always have to stay as victims. This has to be changed.”
The conference was concluded with the members of the GSC reading along their official demands to the school.
Meanwhile, Baek Seung Kyu, the team leader of the Dongguk University’s Center for Human Rights, stated that the center has been functioning properly unlike the GSC’s statements. “The most important element behind solving these cases is confidentiality, and we have never had any secondary damages due to a lack of confidentiality.” Team leader Beak also mentioned that the demands of the GSC will be revised through a discussion table.
