"We decided to abolish the Department of German Language & Literature because of the decline in students’ enrollment,” said Choi Soon-yeal, a Vice-president.
On April 18th, KBS reported that the Department of German Language & Literature won’t accept new students from this year. The reason is because of the low enrollment of students. Therefore, the admissions office at DU will make final decision. After this report, the Department’s students rose up in anger.
The hot issue has to do with the exact number of students enrolled: the news reported only 13 students enrolled to the department while students insisted that 45 students have registered. The students’ association at Department of German Language & Literature started protesting against the authorities in charge of the decision by picketing and wall-posting.
On April 30th, Vice-president Choi and students of the department had an informal
discussion in Myeong-jin Hall. The vicepresident apologized for the wrong information that only 13 students enrolled to the department. He felt very sorry for the mistake and hurting students’ pride. He explained that the information was made
on the basis of the number of students recently enrolled. He had no intention to provide any biased opinions to students.
When he was asked for more sincere apology to students and students’ parents, he replied, “If you ask apologies sincerely, I will do that. But I wonder if the action is really necessary.” Thus, the informal gathering was finished.
It has not been known whether he accepted or refused students’ asking. We need to watch on the situation constantly.
