The road area of Paljeongdo was very old and paved with asphalt. Its drainpipes were constantly out of order, too. So when it rained, rainwater stayed on the surface and would not get drained. Therefore, students have had a lot of trouble crossing the area. Also, the lawns of Paljeongdo were bordered by boxwood trees. The trees were so high that students couldn't enter the lawn area and sometimes were hurt by the overhanging branches.
However, after renovation the road will change from asphalt to an eco-friendly granitic road. There will now be small channels on the changed road. So if rain comes, raindrops will run through the channels. Additionally the boxwood trees have been removed. The lawns will now be open, not only for DU students but for the public also.
Kim Yong-suk, a person in charge of construction, said: "We hope that Paljeongdo will become a public space for everyone."
