Lee Hwi-jun, Alumna Department of Electronics & Electrical Engineering

   Lee Hwi-jun, an alumna of Dongguk University, is an announcer at MBC. He recently visited Dongguk University and shared the story of his challenging life with his juniors. He majored in the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at Dongguk University, worked at a bank, and is now working as an announcer in a broadcasting company. Announcer Lee Hwi-jun, who is currently an anchor of <MBC News Today>, also works as a producer for the YouTube channel “News An-Ha-Ni” and continuously pursues his dreams. After listening to his experiences and thoughts on how to challenge oneselves, the Dongguk Post is going to share his advice on how students at Dongguk University can challenge themselves continuously just like him.

Q. Tell us about yourself and what kind of jobs you are doing these days.

   Starting from April last year, I have been an anchor of morning news <MBC News Today> for a year and four months. I go to work at 3:00 A.M., read the article, check the anchor comments, and run the news from 6:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M.. I also broadcast football play highlights once a week as a sportscaster. These days, I am casting football highlight scenes from the K-League and the Premier League. Recently, I also joined the YouTube channel News An-Ha-Ni again as a producer (PD). I usually edit videos on weekends. As I enjoy working, I work a lot and look forward to it.

Q. How did you become an announcer though you majored in electronic and electrical engineering which has little relation to the job?

   I majored in electronic and electrical engineering, however, it was difficult for me. I had to study for a long time and focus on my major, but it was difficult. For this reason, I looked around to see what else was. As a result, I did club activities and part-time jobs. When I was in university, I was in a joint club called United Nations Students Association (UNSA). It was a club with a lot of people, and there were many events that I got to practice public speaking. I felt it was interesting. Moreover, at that time, Park Ji-sung was in Manchester United, a football club in the Premier League, and I wanted to broadcast those football games. I decided to become an announcer since it is a job that can cover all my interests. I did not begin preparing to become an announcer as I wanted to be a news anchor, but as I prepared, it also became fun. That is the reason why I am running the news now.

Q. We heard that you quit to work  as a banker and prepared to be an announcer and that you moved to MBC after becoming an announcer at KBC. Did you have any worries when you quit a job that many people dream of doing? We would also like to ask you what motivates you to take on other new challenges without being complacent or giving up even after you succeed in the new challenge.

   I had worries. I like new things, however, I do not enjoy adventures as much as I thought. I am the type who orders food that I tried before. For example, let us suppose that I am working in a bank and my life is satisfying. I still hope to work in a better condition, but it is hard to give up my current stable life and challenge myself in actuality. However, anyway, I should work for the rest of my life. The place where I spend the most time of the day is my workplace. Therefore, I looked for a job where I can have fun working for the rest of my life. With that thought, I found a better place. The desire to do something better and more fun as it is only once in my life is the energy for me.

Q. You are working as a YouTube PD for News An-Ha-Ni. How did you start and what contents do you mainly produce? Also, why do you continue to make efforts to expand your field such as YouTube activities even though you have six years of career as an MBC announcer?

   News An-Ha-Ni is a channel operated by MBC’s announcer department. Announcers usually run news and do what they are given to do, so I thought it was hard to show each announcer personally. Accordingly, as I wanted to show people an announcer’s actual character, I started to make those videos. Currently, not that many people watch it, but some fans regularly watch them. As I kept making videos, I have been operating the channel for three years, and people enjoy it a lot and look at it positively. It also plays a role in showing new announcers when new employees come in.

  I learned video editing and am participating as a producer of News An-Ha-Ni. Announcers must always compete with celebrities and reporters. Also, many say that the job of an announcer will lose in the competition with artificial intelligence (AI). Therefore, I thought about what I could do in the other direction. I learned videos and taught myself to play the role of PD by making videos with the thought that having specialized fields would help me overcome the crisis. Now I can make videos to some extent, and it is also fun to do it. I think that the ability of an announcer not only to do what is given but also to produce is important.

Q. On the MBC website, there is your introduction saying, “I want to meet people and dream of becoming a caster in various sports events such as the Olympics and the World Cup.” Why do you want to be a sportscaster and what are you preparing for?

   As I mentioned before, I wanted to be a football caster when I watched the games of Park Ji-sung. As a sportscaster, I do not broadcast only football, but I also have to broadcast various events, especially the Olympics and the World Cup. Not too long ago, I did a alpine skiing broadcast at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. I pursue my dream to be a football caster finally by preparing for it, broadcasting other events and highlighting scenes of football games once a week. Of course, games that can be broadcasted will be decided depending on the company’s situation, but I want to broadcast national team games or World Cup games. I am studying and preparing for it, believing that I will be able to do it someday. It is not just a sportscaster, but it is one of the areas I like and want to try.

Q. Have you ever had difficulties or a hard time trying many things? If so, what efforts have you made to overcome problems?

   There were times when I was not sure about myself. I did not feel ready. I kept questioning “Am I doing the right thing? Am I going on the right way?” I have been doing something, but it was hard in that I felt like I did not know what to do. In order to overcome it, I refined myself enough to overcome it, even though this sounds simple. I acquired a lot of skills that I needed. As a result, even if I went a little off from the way I wanted, I could apply some of my skills and move on to the other side relatively easily. When I doubted if the direction was right, I worked harder and prepared more. Due to my personality, when something like this situation happens, I say, “Is that right? I will make it and prove myself,” and I work harder with determination. I think that something will come out as a result when I keep hone my skills.

Q. On the contrary, when did you feel the happiest and most rewarded when you challenged yourself and experienced success?

   I love now days. Every day is fun and nice. It is better now than a year ago, every year. This is because I worked hard enough not to regret it, and the results came out well and it was worthwhile. Rather than picking up the most worthwhile moment, I want to say that the present is the happiest moment since every day is full of joy.

Q. What are your future goals? In addition, as an announcer is a job that many people see, what kind of person do you want to be remembered as?

   An announcer named Lee Hwi-jun may be a common office worker, but I think it is also important to let more people know me as I am a person shown on television. However, when I became too greedy for fame, I became emotionally exhausted. Thus, I try to be humbler. My goal is to do my job humbly. I think that will lead to better results. I will work harder and try not to regret it.

   Now, my career has not been long enough to have a specialty, but I want to be a person known by name who reminds people of a certain special field. I mean, when we hear the name Sohn Suk-hee, we know that he is a journalist. When we hear the name Kim Sung-ju, we know that he is an emcee or a sportscaster. Of course, it is an era that requires multi-play, but I hope to pursue a certain field of expertise in the meanwhile.

Q. Do you have any advice that you want to give to Dongguk University juniors who feel worried and uncertain about how to chase their dreams or pursue their careers?

   Looking back on my university days, it was fun. I am not saying that I just studied hard, but I did a lot of things available in that period. I have experienced a lot of clubs, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, travel and so on. Maybe that is why I had so much fun that I thought I could not live more happily than then. Getting a job is very tough and stressful these days, but I hope juniors do a lot of joyful things. Those experiences are important at important moments like when we get a job, and when we talk to people. They become important sources. Therefore, I hope they do a variety of activities open to them. Of course, there are some things that you can get from studying, but I think it would be good to learn many things besides studying. University student is a time when they can be understood no matter what they do. Even when I see my friends, they do not lag behind as they went back a little bit or started their social life a little late, and they are all doing the same, well. I just hope students enjoy a fun university life.

   Additionally, I think fewer people know what they want to do. You are lucky if you are clear about what you want to do, but it is not too late even if you are not. It is okay to find what you like and want to do through various experiences. Sometimes, you might fail, but you can still try something else then. It is fun and thrilling when I do something I like. I hope juniors feel this, too. I hope you always consider what you like. Just like my case, majored in electrical engineering, worked at a bank, and now am an announcer, you can do everything when you try hard.
