A press conference with Ven Don kwan Sunim, the chairman of the school founding committee, was held on the chairman’s office of the founding committee which is on the fifth floor of Dongguk University’s Main hall on November 17th. The school founding committee was launched on April 29th this year for the revival of Buddhism and the development of Dongguk. Ven Don kwan Sunim explained that the committee was founded based on Dongguk University’s founding ideologies, which are wisdom and mercy, and that the purpose of the corporation to develop the school is laid through the committee. In addition, he said, “I will do my best to practice the spirit of Buddhism and do not go against the will of the members.”
The future direction and business plan of the school founding committee were also explained at the press conference. Ven Don kwan Sunim noted that the committee should be able to reorganize the scholarship system so that all students can receive scholarships. He also added that it is important to establish a system in which scholarships can be circulated so that beneficiaries can help their juniors in the future. In order to foster juniors, the committee announced that it is planning not only a scholarship system but also a program that can link employment. Ven Don kwan Sunim emphasized the connection between the school and the alumni in order to develop the school, and said it is necessary to increase the sense of belonging by activating interchanges.
Regarding Dongguk University’s 9th place in the JoongAng Ilbo’s university evaluation released this time, he said that the school should improve its scholarship system and expand support so that students can be proud of attending Dongguk University and the school can grow further. In addition, since the school is an educational institution and a research institution, the committee should also increase support of them. During the press conference, Ven Don kwan Sunim highlighted the most that all members should become as one. He said, “The school, the foundations, and the founding committee should become as one and develop using crisis as an opportunity. Efforts should be made to respond to the investments of stakeholders who are alumni and other monks. As the founding committee represents the Dongguk University’s ideology, it will lead the role of fostering talented people. However, the most important thing is that all members to become as one.”
