When people hear the word “university life,” they often think of membership training (MT), festivals, grade management, and so on. Aside from them, other representative elements of university life are team project classes and club activities. Unlike general lectures in which students attend classes, do assignments and take exams alone, a team project is a class method that focuses on and requires cooperation with other students. It is also an activity that university students must experience, whether in liberal arts or major lectures. Also, a club is an activity that many university students consider joining at least once, expecting to have various experiences with new people. The Dongguk Post interviewed university students about their thoughts on team project classes and club activities.

   Before interviewing students for their opinions about team project classes, the Dongguk Post interviewed a professor of the Dongguk University to find out why professors are choosing team project as a class method.

Q. Is there any specific intention for conducting team project classes? If so, what is it?

A. The intention of the team projects or presentations is to have the students become familiar with the types of challenges they will face when they join the workforce. The students will probably have to work in teams and give presentations on a regular basis while working. 

Q. Do you think the students are doing the team project as you intended?

A. I think like any other works, some students are very diligent and work well in a team, while other students do not see the value in it.

Q. If you have anything you want to say to students working on a team project or are about to do it, please tell us. 

A. I would tell my students to take the projects seriously, work hard and try their best. You may never know when you might face the same challenges out in the real world.

Q. Before you participated in the team project class, did you have any expectations about it? If so, do you think your expectations matched the reality?
A. Since I heard that it is not common for everyone to work hard in team project classes, my expectation was that only half of the team members participate properly and the other half participating at a low rate. But in reality, my expectation was half correct. All the team members seemed to participate well in the meetings at the beginning. However, in the meetings we had for the rest of the time, only the team leader, one of my colleagues, and I participated eagerly.

Q. Please tell us about your most successful team project class.

A. It is the class I mentioned in the previous question, “Problem-Based Learning (PBL)” class. We had to present esquisse or materials every week and submit the final work. The team project was composed of organizing meetings, getting materials for the project, working, taking pictures of the process, and making a presentation. Since my team members played their roles well and uploaded their activities on the online bulletin board actively, we were able to get a good evaluation from the professor.

Q. What do you think are the advantages of team project classes?

A. First, I think it is good that there are many people who can give feedback on my idea. The fact that I can get advice from my senior is another advantage of team project classes. Also, it was a chance for me to get close to my colleagues whom I could not meet due to COVID-19.

Q. What do you think is necessary for a fun and useful team project class?

A. It is necessary to divide roles systemically and be punctual. Also, confidence in speaking is needed.

Q. If you have anything you want to say to students working on a team project or are about to do it, please tell us.

A. I do not think you need to be afraid of team project classes. If you can cooperate with team members well, the result will be good based on the effort you put in.

Q. Before you participated in the team project class, did you have any expectations about it? If so, do you think your expectations matched the reality?

A. I thought I could meet various people, especially in liberal arts lectures, and make friends of other departments. However, as good relationships can be developed only when all the team members actively participate, I do not think there were many cases in which my expectation matched the reality.

Q. Please tell us about your most difficult team project class.

A. It was a class called “FTA Electronic Trade,” which required a paper on how to use Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to boost the domestic industry. The first reason why this class was so difficult was that it was not easy to make time for the team project since everyone had a different exam period. The second reason was the difficult assignment. We finally completed the paper and submitted it, but I could do nothing else because all the team members were so focused on the project throughout the semester. The last reason was that there was a bit of a quarrel between members who were passionate about the assignment and members who were not.

Q. What do you think are the disadvantages of team project classes?

A. The biggest disadvantage is that you may not achieve as much as you work. While some people who did not participate well get good grades because the rest of the team worked hard, others get low grades due to the poor participation of team members no matter how hard they try. Also, if one person does not do his/her part, the rest of the team will have to do that instead, which is unfair. In this case, students who worked hard on the project will think that they do not have to put that much effort next time.

Q. What do you think is necessary for a fun and useful team project class?

A. I think all team project classes need a rule that mandates students to score their team members and submit them to the professor when the project is over.

Q. If you have anything you want to say to students working on a team project or are about to do it, please tell us.

A. If you cannot avoid team project classes, enjoy it. No one is good at making PowerPoints and giving presentations at first, but after doing team projects several times, you will grow beyond recognition. Participating in team projects well is good for you in the long term, so even if you have an urge to give up, I hope you to endure. Good luck!

Q. What club are you currently in?

A. I am currently in a photography club.

Q. Have you always wanted to join a club?

A. Before entering university, I wanted to join a club to have connections with people.

Q. Why did you join the club?

A. I joined the club because I was interested in photography and wanted to learn how to edit photos professionally.

Q. What do you think are the advantages of club activities?

A. I think it has the advantage of being able to communicate with friends who have the same interests as me and get close to seniors.

Q. If you have anything to say to the students who are considering joining the club, please tell us.

A. Joining the club has the advantages of being able to make full use of their interests and have connections with members of the club. However, due to the characteristics of the club, you often have to work together and produce results by devoting your time. Therefore, I do not want to recommend club activities to students who wish to focus on their own studies completely.

Q. Is there any reason why you did not join a club?

A. In the case of clubs that do many important activities, I was reluctant to join because I have to invest a lot of my time. Also, in the case of meaningless clubs, I thought joining them was pointless.

Q. Didn’t you have any intention of participating in a club?

A. I did not want to sign up for the club alone because of my shy personality, so I did not have the intention to participate.

Q. Are you still not going to join a club in the future?

A. Currently, I do not have time to devote myself to club activities, so I do not think I am going to join the club.
