   “Are you working part-time?” This is a very familiar question for university students. Part-time job has become a culture for university students who can make their own academic timetables and are relatively easier to distribute time than others. If you look around, you can easily see the university students working part-time for various reasons. In addition, for university students who are at the age of developing one’s economic power, “trading used goods” is a good way to save money. A lot of writings about selling and buying used major textbooks are posted on Everytime, the school’s online community site. The Dongguk Post interviewed two students for each topic to talk more about part-time jobs and trading used goods.

Kim Sa-rang, 21 years old,

Q. After becoming a university student, how many part-time jobs have you tried?

A. I tried three jobs in total. My first part-time job was a “ball person,” who picks up balls in a sports game. I worked for a week, and the working hours were about eight hours a day. The second was an extra for a performance recreating the history of the Joseon Dynasty at a local festival. It was a short-term part-time job that only took three days. Lastly, I am now working part-time at an English academy. I have been working for about 11 months since the end of last year. 

Q. Why do you work part-time?

A. Of course, making money is the biggest reason. As I became a university student, I thought that I should be financially independent from my parents. I felt sorry to get support from them after I became a university student, so I started part-time jobs. Another reason is that I want to experience various things. I think the more various experiences I have, the more helpful it will be to have the job I hope for. 

Q. When choosing a part-time job, what do you think is the most important?

A. I think that responsibility is the most important. What I consider first  is whether I can work without giving up anything while doing the part-time job. If I do not have the confidence to do my job, I will have a lot of mental stress, and the employer will be in trouble. The distance between home and the workplace is also important since I also have to study. The closer the distance is, the better it is to save time.

Q. What is your favorite part-time job and why?

A. I prefer education jobs such as working in an academy or tutoring. It is physically less hard than other jobs, so I still have the strength to study when I come home after doing my part-time job. My role is very important because it is directly connected to the students’ grades, so I feel burdened. However, I cannot say how proud I am when the students get good results. In addition, as I prepare for the class, I can remind the knowledge I have forgotten and sometimes I feel getting smart.

Q. What are the good and bad things you felt while working part-time?

A. The good thing was that I was able to meet many people. I think part-time jobs are one of the greatest ways to get along with people and expand interpersonal relationships. The bad thing is the mental stress that comes from personal relationships. There were many times I was hurt by what the other person said unthinkingly, and I thought about quitting my part-time job.

Q. What is the biggest change caused by a part-time job?

A. The time spent hanging out with my friends is reduced. When I was a freshman, I wanted to participate in various events and hang out with friends, but I could not do as much as I wanted because of my part-time jobs. A good change is that part-time jobs made me live diligently. Since I also had to do assignments and study, I tried to distribute my time efficiently and became diligent.

Q. Please tell me any pieces of advices and tips for university students who want to start part-time jobs!

A. If there are people like me who get psychological damage easily, I want to say that it is okay to make mistakes. I was very worried that I would make a mistake, but the employers were not as bad as I thought. I think everyone can make mistakes. Further, there were a lot of realizations that I got from mistakes. It can be the foundation for me to grow and develop in a better way. Try as much as you can. Any experience will be a valuable property.

Q. Why do you not work a part-time job?

A. The most important reason I do not work part-time is because of the conditions for hiring part-time workers. Like most university students, I am taking classes in my hometown rather going to school due to COVID-19. I wanted to try a part-time job after becoming a university student, so I searched for a part-time job in a nearby area. Since I do not know when I will go to school, I hoped for a part-time job on weekends or for a short period. However, most employers want to hire people who work for more than six months or on weekdays. For this reason, I could not find a part-time job suitable for my situation.

Q. When do you think it is appropriate to have a part-time job?

A. I think it is appropriate to work part-time during the vacation. A part-time job is one of the good ways to experience social life, but it seems difficult to challenge during the semester because of a lot of classes and assignments. On the other hand, there are no classes and assignments during the vacation, so I think I can start a part-time job during the vacation.

Q. What do you think about part-time jobs?

A. I think positively about part-time jobs. Although I have not tried them, most of my friends who have experienced part-time jobs showed positive responses. They said although it is not easy to work, it is good to buy and eat what they want with the money they earned. I think it is meaningful to spend the money I earn on where I want to use. 

Q. If you have a part-time job, what kind of job do you want to do and why?

A. I want to do a part time job related to clothing. As I am wishing a career related to clothing, I naturally became interested in clothing. Also, it seems fun to display or manage clothes in a store.

Q. Do you have any plans to work part-time in the future?

A. Yes. I think it would be fun to experience various jobs through part-time jobs, and I need money to buy something and enjoy a cultural life. So, I am planning to start a part-time job if I have a chance!

Q. How many times have you traded used goods? 

A. I purchased used products three times, and the things that I bought were an exercise equipment and major textbooks. Also, I experienced selling used books and clothes twice. When I traded used goods, I utilized an internet website or a mobile phone application such as Danggeun Market or Everytime. 

Q. Why do you trade used goods?

A. The biggest reason is that I can buy the product I want at a much cheaper price than the original price. As a university student, it is a bit burdensome to buy everything with my money. There are difficulties in looking carefully and checking things before purchasing, but I can reduce the financial burden as much as I want. In addition, I can buy products in better quality than I thought. That is why I purchase used goods.

Q. What are you most worried about when trading used goods?

A. When I am a buyer, the most worrying thing is the quality and condition of the product I am willing to buy. I check carefully whether the product is worn out or it is at an appropriate price. I also  check the seller’s reliability because I heard that some sellers are crooks. When I am a seller, I think that the attitude of the person who buys my product is the most worried. I wonder if I can sell my product to this buyer when the buyer tries to cut the price too much or postpone the deposit.

Q. What is the most important thing when trading used goods?

A. Trading used goods is not buying new products in stores, so I think trust between buyers and sellers is the most important thing. I believe that trading used goods can be smoothly progressed only when certain products and certain payments are guaranteed. 

Q. What are the good and bad things you felt while trading used goods?

A. As I said before, the best thing is that I can get the products I want cheaply. This not only reduces the financial burden, but also helps save time. On the other hand, the bad thing is that damage cases often occur. Fortunately, I have not been harmed by trading used goods yet, but I always have to suspect fraud while trading used goods.

Q. What do you think about trading used goods? 

A. I think positively about trading used goods. From a societal perspective, trading used goods reduces unnecessary waste of economic and time resources because it is selling goods that the seller does not need, and I think it is helpful to reduce waste discharge and prevent environmental pollution. From a personal perspective, it can be the basis of guaranteeing good living conditions because we can get various items that we want at a cheaper price and more conveniently.

Q. Please tell me any pieces of advices and tips for people who want to trade used goods!

A. As I mentioned earlier, meticulously checking the condition of the items is the most important thing. If you have found a used product you want to trade, I hope you take a closer look at the product and price before trading!

Q. Why do you not trade used goods?

A. The biggest reason for me is that I do not want to take risks in dealing with someone whose identity is unclear. While trading used goods, I know that information about the other person is generally uncertain. In addition, I think it has something to do with my personality. I looked for information in order to try to trade used goods, but I gave up because there are many things to consider such as the condition of the product, the market price and the method of trading (delivery or direct dealing). It was annoying. I assume that diligent people are good at trading used goods.

Q. What do you think about trading used goods?

A. I think it is not reliable because I often saw the cases of fraud trading used goods in various media. However, when I see people who enjoy trading used goods around me, it seems that not everyone is a fraud. It sometimes looks good because they can buy the products at a cheap price through trading used goods. Since the advantages and disadvantages of trading used goods are clear, I am neutral about it.

Q. What do you think is the reason people trade used goods?

A. I think the biggest merit of trading used goods is the price. If the price is too high, there will be no reason to buy one at the risk of fraud. From the point of view of the sellers, it would be satisfactory in that they can dispose of the items that are no longer needed with financial gains.

Q. Do you have any plans to trade used goods in the future? 

A. Yes. When I see a cheap used item, sometimes I want to buy it. However, I am not sure when I will start it. I feel like I will be addicted to trading used goods and use it habitually after I try it once.
