COVID-19 is causing mankind to go through turbulent times. Social distancing and telecommuting, which were not common before, have emerged as new cultures, and it is predicted that some fields such as medicine, politics, and economics will face changes due to COVID-19. These changes are called “Post-COVID-19,” and the current era undergoing such changes is called “Post-COVID-19 Era.”
University education is also influenced by the Post-COVID-19 Era. Then, how should universities respond to such changes? Dongguk University intended to answer this question through the “Dongguk Future Education Forum.” This forum, which was held for the first time this year, was launched at i.SPACE, on the third floor of Wonheung Hall, Dongguk University, on September 11th. It was attended by only the necessary personnel to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and it was broadcasted live on Youtube. In the congratulatory speech at the forum, President Yoon Sung-yee said that he hopes the Dongguk Future Education Forum will play a pivotal role in preparing for the rapidly changing future, and that members of Dongguk University will develop an insight into the future.
After the congratulatory speech was over, the forum was followed by a keynote, two presentations, and debate. The keynote was given by Professor Choi Jae-cheon from Ewha Womans University, under the theme of “The Post COVID-19 Era: Changes in Society and Education.” In his speech, Professor Choi said that universities should think about what to teach rather than how to teach and emphasized the importance of teaching how to live with nature.
The individual presentations were made on two topics. Kim Hyeon-seok, Director of the Teaching and Learning Development Center at Dongguk University, gave a presentation under the theme of “Response to the COVID-19 Era: Dongguk University’s EdTech Spread Strategy.” Next, professor Bae Sang-hoon from Sungkyunkwan University, gave a presentation on “The Crisis Faced and Opportunities Developed in University Education Due to COVID-19.”
Lastly, Lee Kang-woo, Director of the Convergence Education Center at Dongguk University; Kim Jon-pil, Director of Naeil Shinmoon; Lee je-jun, President of the General Student Council(GSC); and Kim Jeong-do, President of the student council at Dongguk University Graduate School joined the presenters for debate.
Jeon Mi-kyeong, Dean of Educational Innovation at Dongguk University, who organized this forum, said this forum was organized to set direction and tasks for educational innovation in the Post-COVID-19 Era. Also, she said that she hopes Dongguk University will continue to seek for ways to improve and innovate the quality of education through the Dongguk Future Education Forum.
