Bird Box / Kim Ji-min

   “PARALYZED BY AN UNKNOWN CREATURE.” This is the phrase that could best explain the plot of Bird Box. The world is overwhelmed with the unknown creature in the movie. If people see it, they would commit suicide. With such fear, Malorie, the main character tries hard to survive. Facing  different situations, she experiences love, hope and despair. In the end, Malorie manages to survive. The interesting thing is that the place  she gets to stay at the end. It was the place for the blind. The blind managed to survive since  they do not get to see what is in front of them.

   To me, the theme of the movie was understood as “the reversed world.” I assume that the definition of “secure” is applied differently for the Bird Box world. Those who are blind are the ones to survive, and those who are non-blind are the ones who are easily exposed to death. Also, the movie does not portray the unknown creature in detail. We do not know how the unknown creature looks like, why it is happening, or where it came from. The only thing movie tells us is that “there is an unknown creature.” This setting is the one that made me focus and more thrilled.
If you are interested in what is going to happen next and how our heroine Malorie goes through all sorts of situations, then you better watch the movie.

Yumi's Cells / Yu Na-kyung

   Have you ever watched Disney animation, Inside Out? In the movie, four emotion characters in a girl’s head control her feelings and actions. This time, I want to introduce webtoon version of Inside Out. It is “Yumi’s Cells.” Similar as the story of the animation, Yumi’s cells control Yumi’s action in her head. But the different thing is that since they are “cells,” they can do more things than just emotions. Do you wonder what kinds of cells are there? Fashion Cell, Hungry Cell, Detective Cell, Emotion Cell,… and more! Among those, the most important cell is Prime Cell. Prime Cell has outstanding power than other cells and every person has it. In case of Yumi, Love Cell plays a role of Prime Cell since love is the most important value to Yumi. Therefore, Love Cell helps Yumi get over any challenges about love by cooperating with other cells. Whenever I read lots of love stories that Yumi and her cells go through, I am fascinated by the author’s creativity.

   Even though every cell has its different role, the purpose of their works is same, Yumi’s happiness. Imagine that lots of cells in your head work only for your happiness. Isn’t   it adorable and impressive? You may think that the story is a little childish due to the adorable drawing style. But, do not judge by its cover! I am sure you will be immersed in the story as soon as you read it!

SKY Castle / Seo Yoo-jeong

   SKY Castle, there might be no Koreans who have never heard of it. With such attractive characters and great acting of actors, it became one of the fads in Korea. I was also a big fan of this drama and always waited for Fridays and Saturdays about two months. This drama is about families who live in the village called SKY Castle. The reason they were close with each other was that parents were all obsessed with their kids entering famous university. One day Kim Ju-young, who coordinates students’ learning process professionally to make them enter Seoul National University came up and their peaceful lives started to mess up. The first episode ends with someone committing suicide because of her. Isn’t it shocking? There was an episode that I was totally into it. When Mi-hyang and Ye-seo had to decide whether to tell the truth about Kim Ju-young and rescue Woo-ju or just keep the secret and Ye-seo could enter the Seoul National University, I imagined if I were one of them. Thinking of Woo-ju, hestitating is not a proper thing to do. However,  in some perspectives, I thought, to Mi-hyang and Ye-seo, telling the truth and getting expelled from the school make their whole life as nothing. Considering the plot, to be honest and apologize to Woo-ju’s family were quite absurd, but their bravery gave me a good influence. For someone who has not seen SKY Castle, I just want to say “Do not hesitate to  watch it!”

   Cold weather, IKEA and people with blond hair and blue eyes are what most people think when they imagine Scandinavian countries. Those countries were idealized as utopia for gender equality and great balance between work and life because those things were unimaginable in South Korea. Among Scandinavian countries, Finland is well known for an education system in South Korea. In this book, a Korean who is married to Finnish introduces a variety of lifestyle such as cohabiting and same sex couple through an interview. The interviewee talks about one’s personal life and what living in Finland is like. Through the interviewee’s answers, the readers could get an insight of a daily life there. Personally, after I read the book, I felt that Finland emphasizes the importance of independence and responsibility. They do not care much about other people’s judgement and do whatever they want as long as they do not cause harm anyone. However, they have lots of concerns over environment and try to make a better community. In Korea, there is a lot of pressure and expectations to achieve at certain age and this makes people feel insecure about themselves and prohibit them from pursuing their dream. I believe the Finnish attitude is what our current society needs, which is not living up to anyone’s standard but their own with a sense of responsibility.

A Collection for Korea / Cho Moon-kyung

   In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement, a special exhibition about Gansong Cheon Hyung-pil is currently being held at Dongdaemun DDP. This exhibition shows the legacy of Cheon Hyung-pil, who dedicated his efforts to preserve cultural assets when the Korean Empire struggled for independence. In the exhibition, you can not only see the treasure but also the background of obtaining them. One of the most impressive story in the exhibition is about retaining a white porcelain item of the late Joseon Dynasty, which Gansong won at the Gyeong-seong Art Club. This club was one of the biggest auctions at the time. He had a fierce battle with the Japanese for a bid at the auction. In addition, this exhibition includes the story of a Boseong school as well as heritages, national treasures and relics that Gansong has gathered and guarded against Japan for the future of Korea. In the exhibition, the spaces are divided into five spaces such as Announce, Communication, Collect, Guard and Recover. Considering this distribution, it is an exotic way to include a story in each space. There are so many treasures which have exciting stories. I recommend you not only to watch collection and the relics just as the art but also feel the spirit of Gansong through the 100th anniversary of the exhibition.
