Early this year, the General Student Council (GSC) has been trying to introduce direct president election with Donggukians. In spite of the efforts, there was no progress for the direct president election. The GSC put another effort for the direct election system by holding a rally with students on November 15th. They stressed that the president of the school has to be elected by students, not by the board of directors, as the existing system. Kim Jung-do, the Chairperson of the GSC, remarked, “If the direct president election system is introduced, the candidates of the president would provide better welfares for students. There are lots of things to be improved such as school facility, but we had no power to convey our opinion. I know it will not be easy to establish direct election system. However, I am sure that we can make it. If our effort for direct election system is sincere, then I believe there will be people who sympathize with us.”
In addition to holding the rally, the steering committee of the GSC had a meeting with the corporate of school on the same day. It was the first official meeting which students participated to discuss the direct president election with the corporate. Until now, only the Chairperson of the GSC had a meeting with corporate individually. Actually, the steering committee of the GSC intended to meet the Chairperson of the board of directors.
However, members of the corporate were the only participants. Park Ki-ryeon from the corporate said, “There is nothing to be decided about the upcoming election system, so I cannot say the details about it right now. According to the rule, the president is elected after discussion of the members of board of directors. Therefore, to change the way of electing the president, the law of private universities needs to be changed first.” He added, “We will consider which one is good for developing our university by listening to students, professors, and office workers of the school. We promise that we will not unilaterally notify the upcoming election system to students.”
Finishing the meeting, Kim Jung-do conveyed the demand proposal and letter which he wrote for the Chairperson of the board of directors. Park Ki-ryeon promised that before the board of directors’ meeting, they will inform the students of the meeting schedule on which next year’s president election system will be decided. Of course, it might be too early to judge whether this meeting will contribute to introducing the direct election system in school or not. However, this meeting is meaningful in that it was the chance for students to discuss the issue of direct election system with school for the first time. Still, Donggukians are hoping the direct election system to settle down in the school.
