On February 5th, class registration had a server problem. It was not the first time that the server was overloaded. However, unlike the past, which took about ten minutes to get into the website, it took 30 minutes this time. On that day, the class registration was only for juniors and seniors. After the students got into the class registration website, many of them were not able to connect to the website because of the error on the server. As a result, the students could not register for the classes that they planned to. Jo Ara (Junior, Department of business Administration) said,“Before 8:30 A.M. On the day of registration, I was able to enter the class registration website. However, the speed of website got slower after 8:25 A.M., then right before the registration time, the website became weird. Whenever I tried to log-in, I was signed out. Moreover, I tried to click ‘sign-up’ for classes, it did not work. Finally, around 8:45 A.M., I was signed in.”
After the server problem occurred, the Office of Information posted a written apology regarding the situation. It contained the reason for this error on Dongguk University website. Besides the apology announcement, there were no actual actions that were taken for the students. According to Choi Moon-gyu, the leader of the Information Management Team at the Office of Information, said, “This error happened since we changed the equipment for the system recently, and a compatibility problem happened. This was the first time that the connection delay exceeded 10 minutes. Thus, we took follow-up action by checking the system.” He also said, “This type of problem will not recur in the future because we already fixed everything.”Following the situation, the General Student Council (GSC) visited the Office of Information and discussed the problem with the staff. They proposed a“Mobile Class Registration System,”which enables students to do the official class registration on their smartphone to improve convenience. Jo Ara (Junior, Department of business administration) also mentioned her thoughts on the problem by saying,“I cannot understand why the server is so weak. Each day of class registration is allowed to different group of students based on grades and double majors. The reason why the school divided them is to make it easy to access the server. However, the server is still unstable.”
The students were stressed out due to the possible failure of the class registration system. They pointed out there should be no error from now on. If a problem occurs on the class registration day, students cannot do anything and get compensation. Lim Hoo-na, (Sophomore, Department of English Language and Literature), said, “Since the server crashes easily, I could not be able to take the mandatory classes. It makes me stressed out. I need to re-make out a timetable after failing my class registration. I hope the same problem will not happen again."
