Starting from last September, the Central Library of Dongguk University has been constructing a Learning Commons Zone. This plan is a part of the ACE+ project, which supports universities to develop better teaching systems. The Learning Commons Zone will provide students with a place to take a rest and sometimes will invite eminent figures for lectures.
The Learning Commons Zone will consist of three parts. The very frontal part, which would be named the Art section, will have several tables and chairs for students who want to study either by themselves or as a group. The central part, which would be called the Culture section, will have bean bag chairs so that students can take a rest and enjoy cultural matters. The rear part of the place, specified as an Exhibition section, would be utilized as a place for a lecture or an exhibition.
Although the three parts are separated, they can be combined depending on some situation, since they will be partitioned by the moving walls. Depending on the scale of the lecture or the exhibition, the central and the rear part would be conjoined so that more students can have the opportunity to participate in the special occasion. Also, in order to allow students to have a comfortable and peaceful mood, white noise such as sound from a cafe or a library will be equipped in the place.
Jung Wang-geun, the chief of the Learning Commons Zone, said, “The Construction team has planned to finish the construction before Chuseok and furnish the place before the mid of October.” He added, “In order to prepare a cozy place away from books for students as soon as possible, the Central Library is trying to do its best to open the Learning Commons Zone on the 16th of October but the opening date can be changed.”
