On September 19th, Talk Busking by Yoo Seung-min, a member of Bareun Party, was planned to be held as an eve festival of “Dongguk Sketchbook.” The busking was aimed to communicate with Donggukians. Knowing the event from “Everytime,” a community site for university students, and the Facebook page of “Dongguk General Student Council,” many Donggukians looked forward to the events. However, it was canceled on the day, causing conflict between Yoo Seung-min and the General Student Council (GSC).
The GSC announced that the rally against the event was planned to be held and they had to cancel the talk busking concerning the safety of the students and Yoo Seung-min. Also, they posted up card news on their Facebook page contending that Yoo Seung-min wanted to cancel the event first.
However, unlike the GSC’s statement, Yoo Seung-min said that he never wanted to cancel the event. On his Facebook page, he announced that even though he heard the rally was going to be held, he had requested the event to go on. According to him, despite of his call, the GSC told him that even if the events would take place indoors, picketing against Yoo Seung-min will still be held. Therefore, the GSC concluded that it would be hard to hold the event and he just accepted it.
After that, as many presses including “Korea JoongAng Daily,” “The Dong-A Ilbo,” and “Yonhap News Agency” covered this matter, the GSC deleted the posts related to the busking and it made the matter more serious. Only after a few hours later, they posted a statement for apology on their Facebook page. In the post, they apologized to Yoo Seung-min for making him misunderstand their opinion as an unilateral notice. They explained that the reason why they deleted the posts was just to prevent the controversy to grow and acknowledged their mistakes. They also made an apology to students who have looked forward to the event.
After they posted the statement, Lee Jun-seok, a member of the Bareun Party, said on his Facebook page, “While there were many presses insisting Yoo Seoung-min canceled the event, after the truth revealed, only two of the presses covered the fact.” Criticizing that the GSC apologized for their mistakes too late, he said that he could not understand the GSC’s reaction to the matter.
Joung Ha-yoon (Freshman, Department of English Language & Literature) mentioned, “I feel sorry about the GSC’s inadequate reaction. I am worried that some people might have bad reputation about our school because of this matter.”
