On August 17th, the feminism seminar “Femi-Femi Change” was held in Dongguk University. The General Coed Student Council (GCSC) held the seminar and Donggukians who wanted to join particiated in the seminar.
The first seminar which was held in Haklim Hall on August 17th started at 6:00 P.M. Eight students participated in the seminar including Sung Im-eun, the chairperson of the GCSC. She started the seminar talking about the purpose of “Femi-Femi Change.” She mentioned, “I always wanted to arrange the occasion to talk about feminism as the chairperson of the GCSC. I am glad to have a chance like this.” The seminar began with the introduction of how the seminar will go off. “Challenge of Feminism” written by Jung Hee-jin, “Notions of Feminism” edited by the Center for Women’s and Cultural Theory (CWCT), and “I Am a Feminist” written by Suksun, the feminism school magazine of Korea University were used in the discussion papers.
Lots of subjects were handled during the seminar from basic notions of feminism to hot issues like menstrual cup. They also discussed about their own thoughts about feminism. Sung Im-eun said, “I think feminism is an endless process of disassembling and restructuring.” Another participant Jeong Se-eun (Sophomore, Division of Electronics and Electrical Engineering) mentioned, “I got to know feminism only a month ago from my friend. After that, I started to read books about feminism and talked about it with my colleagues.” She added, “Sometimes I could not sleep after reading those books because of anger. I was impressed with the quote ‘Knowledge makes us vulnerable.’ To sum up, the way I look at the world changed a lot in a month.”
After talking about their experiences, they read the discussion papers and had some conversation with the points. The seminar lasted over two hours.
On August 24th, they held the second feminism seminar with the subject “Family and Love”adding the book “Gender and Society” edited by CWCT.
