The by-election of the General Student Council (GSC), the General Coed Student Council (GCSC), and the student councils of three colleges (Social Science, Arts, and Law) took place from March 27th to 30th. Also, the counting of votes was conducted by the Emergency Planning Committee and the Central Election Management Commission in Main Auditorium. The absence of student councils was filled but its process left behind several problems and arguments regarding the values each party pursued, the method of electioneering, and election administration.
There was a controversy about the utterance of reverse discrimination regarding women’s lounge from Yoon Yeong-ji, the vice chairperson of the GSC. At the first open hearing of the GSC and the GCSC, she said, “It is right to establish not only women’s lounge but also men’s one because men also would feel unsafe and inconvenient as women do. Although women’s rights should be protected, it is dangerous if it inflicts reverse discrimination to men.” Against the remark, DONGTEUM Party contradicted that women’s lounge was established because there is danger against women to suffer from sexual violence in the atmosphere of androcentrism on campus.
In addition, the fact that Woo Dong-hee, the previous candidate for the chairperson of Really;D Party, had belonged to the certain political party provoked some arguments on Facebook community page, “Dongguk Bamboo Forest.” Regarding the issue, he commented, at the open hearing, “It is not admitted to impose political mind to the students. We can share what we discuss and agree at the student council so political intention and the decisions made by the student council are completely different each other.”
Another issue came up to the surface at the open hearing of candidates for the Student Council of the College of Social Science due to a picture of students putting their foot in the pool during the sit-down against Lifelong Education College Plan last year. COUNTER PUNCH Party presented the photo as a proof to point out flaws on the previous GSC’s attitude but its source was embroiled in a dispute because the doubt that it was offered by the school has been raised. However, on the spot, Kim Min-yong, the previous chairperson of campaign team for COUNTER PUNCH Party, said, “I collected much data from various websites and I cannot remember the photo’s origin because of its large number.”
Moreover, the Emergency Planning Committee and the Central Election Management Commission provoked a controversy of their unskilled preparation during the voting period. On the first day, the initiation of voting was delayed, which should have had started at 9:00 A.M. Therefore, the voting period was extended for about a day due to the shortage of time and the turnout of votes.
With the election of the GSC, the GCSC, and the student councils of each college, the students’ attention to them would be important for the vitalization of students’ society on campus. Vice Chairperson Yoon said, “We will conduct surveys to reflect students’ situation and have a discussion with the school to realize our promise such as holding athletics competitions and setting up an office for the student council on the Bio-medical Campus.” Sung Im-eun, the chairperson of the GCSC mentioned, “We are going to prepare for organizing the network for minorities’ rights, the festival of menstruation, and ‘Duribeoner’ activities from April. Plus, above all, we will deal with the sexual harassment which arose from the Department of Advertising and Public Relations.”
