On June 15th, 3:00 P.M., a press conference was held by the General School Council (GSC) in front of the Main Hall. The main purpose of the press conference was to postpone the board meeting to this coming 20th. The GSC students voiced their opinion on resignation of board directors and the new members being discussed. According to them, since last December, the school promised the resignation of the members of board of directors and taking responsibility. However, no action was taken since then, but only the change of people in positions by electing members from the Jogye order. In addition, students claim the newly appointed members are also those in controversies. Ja-gwang Sunim, who lessened the punishment of Seo Woi-hyun, the excommunicated executive chief of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order is now being discussed as the next chairman of the board of directors.
Kim Do-yun, a student in year 16 from Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy Matter, said “The school said that the owner of the school is the students. By the school’s logic, students need to be able to take part in crucial decisions like the election of the board members. Why does the school keep declining communication with the students? We are requiring for school to postpone the board meeting to this coming 20th and listen to what the students are saying first.” Also, Kim Ye-jin from the Dept. of Law claimed that Dongguk University board of directors is not for the Jogye Order.
The press conference ended with An-dre, the chairperson of the GSC, handing over a document requiring for a meeting with the school to school faculty.
